Nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace began as a youth project in Luke Mickelsons garage in 2012. A set of bunk beds was being developed so that children without beds could enjoy a place to sleep. Despite being short on the money, Mickelsons family rebuilt 10 more bunk beds along the way. During the Christmastime season, the charity built 15 bunk beds at a cost of $50,000.

Skender Partners With Sleep In Heavenly Peace For Annual Volunteer Day
Nearly 100 Skender employees, friends and family volunteered on Saturday, June 22 at Skenders annual volunteer day to build the bed frames for 50 bunk beds. Through a partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace , the day will benefit 100 children across the Chicago metropolitan area in need of beds.
We were honored to partner with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and utilize our volunteers talents in the building trades for an amazing cause, explains Belinda Moore, Executive Director of Skender Foundation. The work of our mix of friends, family, Builders Board members and professionals will help push forward Sleep in Heavenly Peaces mission of ensuring that no children have to sleep on the floor.
During the Build Day, volunteers came together under the guidance of Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build 50 bunk bed frames. Those beds will then be packed, delivered and assembled at the homes of families on the waiting list with SHP to provide accessible, stable and safe beds for 50 families and 100 children in need.
Founded in 2012, SHP is a nationwide nonprofit 501 organization that builds and delivers beds to children who dont have beds to sleep in. As of 2019, the organization has 150 chapters around the United States and has built over 4,000 beds.
Why Free Furniture Is Donated To Low
One can offer the furniture for any reason. Some of the reasons are given below. You can give the following reasons and note that the donation causes are limited but there are a lot of purposes in reality.
- Low-income singer fathers, single mothers, or parents can get the furniture for their newborn baby.
- A homeless person can be provided a cushion, blanket, beds, or any other thing needed.

Nonprofit Sleep In Heavenly Peace Provides A Place To Rest For Youth In Need
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national organization with the goal of helping get children ages 3-17 off the floor and into a bed they can call their own. SHPs Alameda County chapter is just one of 286 chapters nationwide supporting young kids sleeping situations.
Christy Curtis, co-president of the Alameda chapter of SHP, recalls her first experience with the organization.
I felt a calling to do this, she said. We loaded up two to three beds for a family. I was nervous, because I didnt know what to say or do. There were no beds for the three kids in this particular family. I helped my brother put the beds together, and the kids were ecstatic. I was hooked from that day on.
A project that began with the building of one bed for a single family developed into something a whole lot more. After Luke Mickelson, the SHP Founder, built his first bed, he used the leftover wood from the first bunk to create another idea. He posted on Facebook to find others in need and received an overwhelming response from families and a litany of locals eager to help and volunteer. And so, Sleep in Heavenly Peace was born.
If someone has a child that does not have access to their own bed, they automatically qualify for help from SHP. Those interested can visit SHPs website, search for a local chapter and fill out the application form. After reviewing the application, someone will reach out to the family, and then they will be placed on the list for a bed.

It is a private charity that provides free mattresses. Under the program of free beds for low-income families, the children and adults are provided the free bed. The submission of the photo Id is important. They give it based on a first-come, first-serve. And this is the self-service program which means you have to carry, transport, and lift the mattresses by yourself. No transportation service is provided by them.
