Adjustable Bases Vs Smart Beds

As we noted above, smart beds appeal to many people because they offer customizations and extra functions beyond a standard mattress. But buying a smart bed isnt the only way to make your sleep setup more customizable. You might also consider an adjustable base, which lets you lift the head and/or foot of the mattress to elevate certain parts of your body and tailor the support to your activities and preferences. Heres a closer look at the pros and cons of adjustable bases.

Modular & Adjustable Bases

Since Sleep Number is all about individualized comfort, it is not surprising that they also make different types of bases for the mattress.

Sleep Number makes one modular base and three different adjustable bases for their mattresses: FlexFit 1, FlexFit 2 and FlexFit 3.

Note: A Sleep Numbers modular or adjustable base is not the only base that works with a Sleep Number mattress. All one needs to have is a flat and sturdy surface for the mattress or the individual may potentially void his or her warranty.

Ratings And Reviews Common Praise

  • Couples love being able to personalize the firmness of their side of the bed. If one person likes to sleep on their side and another doesnt, they have a great solution here.
  • People with back problems or medical issues that require them to sit up at different points love the flexibility of Sleep Number beds. They can adjust the firmness of their bed for a couple of nights if needed and can raise/lower the head of their bed with a FlexFit Adjustable Base depending on their current needs.
  • There was heavy praise for the longevity and durability of the Sleep Number bed.People came back to Sleep Numbers site to say theyve had their bed for 10+ years and they are still comfortable. Patented Airflow Transfer System

If your body type generates extra heat or you just want to sleep cooler, all our memory foam beds come with the option of adding on our patented Airflow Transfer System, which allows cooler air to flow in two directions even when you sleep in the same position all night. Cooler air will enter through the many small holes that go down through the surface of the memory foam and out through the convoluted channels on the firmer base foam.

It also works in reverse, as air can enter through the sides and up through the surface holes. This unique system also allows a heat transfer as the warmer air radiates off the body and ventilates down through the holes and out the sides of the mattress. That is why we always use a breathable fabric where the channels exit on the sides of the mattress. In addition, a greater volume of airflow transfer will occur with even the slightest movements that occur throughout the sleeping process. While some mattress companies offer airflow through the middle layer of the mattress, they fall short of allowing the mattress user to receive any airflow benefit.

Airflow Transfer System® is protected by U.S. Patent No. 7,334,280.

Sleep Number Brand And Reputation

m7 Bed: Memory Foam Series Beds & Mattresses

The Sleep Number Corporation, based in Minneapolis, MN, manufactures Sleep Number beds in the United States. The company started life as the Select Comfort Corporation in 1987.

The main way that people can purchase a Sleep Number bed is through a Sleep Number store, of which there are more than 570 across all 50 states.

Regularly ranked highest in customer satisfaction with mattresses by J. D. Power, Sleep Number became an official Sleep + Wellness partner of the National Football League in 2018.

The company also offers consultations with sleep professionals, who can provide helpful guidance on how to sleep better.

According to company research, compared with those who slept on traditional innerspring mattresses, people who used a Sleep Number bed fell asleep faster, slept more deeply, had fewer sleep disturbances, and had more relief from back pain. However, no objective research supports these findings.

Sleep Number beds contain technology that measures a persons sleep data, including body position and temperature.

Sleep Number beds allow for automatic or manual customization of different sides of the mattress.

Generally, Sleep Number beds have the following key characteristics:

Beds in this series have the classic Sleep Number bed features, plus comfort layers to provide pressure point relief.

The mattresses in this range include:

This range of mattresses may suit people who often wake up with aches and pains.

Sleep Number Bed Competitors

Sleep Number beds make high-quality, innovative air beds. They feature Dual Adjustability and SleepIQ® Technology that allows you to track the quality of your sleep.

While these remain some of the most popular beds nationwide, are they really worth the hype?

Let’s take a look at some of Sleep Number’s closest competitors to see which mattress brand reigns supreme.

Sleep Number Classic Series C2 Vs Personal Comfort A2 Bed

Both the Sleep Number Classic Series c2 and Personal Comfort A2 mattresses are airbeds. Like Sleep Number, Personal Comfort exclusively produces airbeds with customizable firmness levels to suit your weight and sleep position, but Personal Comforts prices tend to be lower. The A2 is part of Personal Comforts Classic Series, which is the most affordable of the brands five airbed lines.

The A2 is 9 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 1 comfort layer. The c2 by Sleep Number is 8 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 2 gel-infused comfort layer. Overall, the beds are very similar in construction, but the Sleep Number c2 devotes a bit more material to the comfort layer and is, surprisingly, more affordable than the Personal Comfort A2.

Controlling Your Bed And Finding Your Sleep Number

The SleepIQ app is well organized and easy to navigate, with three tabs on the bottom: Sleep, Bed, and Profile.

In the Bed tab, you can adjust your Sleep Number setting, control the FlexFit base, and set up bedtime Routines so the foot warmer is on when you tuck in at night. Here, you can also enable/disable the Responsive Air, underbed lighting, and sleep tracking features.

Your Sleep Number can range from 5 to 100 , and is adjustable in increments of 5. The SleepIQ app offers a useful feature that can help you find your ideal setting, though it still takes some trial and error. Navigate to Bed > Sleep Number Setting > Find Favorite, and the app will let you test a range of firmness levels.

Since it can take some time to get used to a new mattress, Sleep Number recommends trying your selected firmness setting for two to five nights. If you’re not comfortable, try adjusting it by 5 or 10. Increasing the number will increase the firmness, and vice versa. I like my mattress on the softer side, so I kept my Sleep Number at 30 for the first few nights. That was a little too soft, so I increased it to 45, which feels perfect.

Sleep Number Sheet Features

This series takes the key characteristics of a Sleep Number bed and the pressure relief ability of the Performance series and adds cooling features that may benefit people who tend to get very hot at night.

The smart fabric is breathable, and the mattress absorbs heat to help prevent sleepers from getting too hot, which may impact sleep quality.

The two models include the Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed, which has a 6-in comfort layer, and the Sleep Number 360 i10 Smart Bed, which has a 7-in comfort layer.

Which Sleep Number Bed Is Best For Me

Before we jump into recommendations, its important to note that the experience of sleeping on an airbed can feel quite different from that of more traditional mattress styles, like all-foam or hybrid beds. If you love memory foam, for example, an airbed wont provide the same enveloping feeling you enjoy, regardless of how thick the comfort layers are.

Secondly, if you enjoy cuddling with your partner while you sleep, the dual air chambers may impede that and can feel uncomfortable. Lastly, these airbeds arent for people with a limited budget, considering the most affordable Smart Bed option starts at $999.

The Chilipad And Ooler

Before we compare the BedJet to the Chili Technology products, let’s see how the ChiliPad Sleep System and new Ooler Sleep System stack up against each other.

Unlike the BedJet, the Chilipad Sleep System and Ooler Sleep System are water-based rather than air-based. The control unit circulates either heated or chilled water through the hydronic mattress pad, which either raises or lowers the temperature of the bed itself. Both the Chilipad Sleep System and the Ooler Sleep System can lower bed temperatures to 55 degrees or raise them to 110 degrees.

While the temperature controlling mechanisms work more or less the same way, the Ooler Sleep System comes with a whole suite of additional features. It has a lower profile, sleeker overall design, and built-in ambient noise control, which will make the Ooler Sleep System a less distracting part of your bedroom.

The Chilipad Sleep System required a tedious and involved cleaning process every three months, as well as the separate purchase of a cleaning product. Luckily the Ooler Sleep System leaves this outdated maintenance system in the dust with an automatic UV light cleansing system. I think this particular item is a massive improvement since it makes the Ooler Sleep System virtually maintenance free.

One downside of the Ooler Sleep System versus the Chilipad Sleep System is that it requires a smartphone app to operate, which is bad news for those who don’t own smartphones or who like to keep their phones off at night.

The Cooling Ability Of Different Types Of Mattresses

There are multiple types of mattresses sold in the current mattress market. Different types of mattresses are able to keep sleepers cool throughout the night to varying degrees. Generally, mattresses that fall under each category are constructed similarly and share many of the same features.

Of course, there is still plenty of variation within each mattress type. Quality of materials, construction methods, and additional features of specific models will affect how good a particular mattress is for you.
