Sleep Number Vs Traditional Mattress

Construction And Materials Comparison

How is an isense mattress different than a Sleep Number mattress?

The construction of a mattress is of central importance to its feel, performance, and durability. The construction includes both the design of its layers and the actual materials used in those layers.

In general, a mattress can be understood as having two main sections:

  • The comfort system is the top part and offers the most immediate effect on feel. It is normally made of polyfoam, memory foam, latex, wool, cotton, and/or polyester.
  • The support core is the bottom part of the mattress. It affects the mattress feel and the performance of the comfort system. The support core also helps prevent against excessive sagging in the mattress. It can be made with polyfoam, latex, innerspring coils, or air chambers.

Both the comfort system and support core can be made up of one or more layers that can be the same or different materials. Quality components in each and every layer will help protect against a weak link that drags down the overall mattress performance.

The following sections give an overview of the construction and materials in the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number beds. While we know the basics about what goes into them, neither company discloses all the specifications of their mattresses, which can at times make it difficult to fully compare their models.

Best Sleep Number Base Alternative

A solid and firm bed base is highly beneficial to a mattress. Uneven surfaces cause the body weight to sink into different spots on the mattress lessening its lifespan. Having said that, choosing an adjustable base that mirrors the impressive features of Sleep Number Base goes miles to unlock the potential of a mattress.

In addition to the adjustable bases highlighted above, another great Sleep Number base alternative is theGhostBed Adjustable Base. It is well-suited to those withsleep apnea, lower back pain as well as couples with diverse comfort preferences.

The base comes with different lower and upper body positions for lounging, watching TV and sleeping around. Its zero-gravity setting is impressive for lower back pain and high blood pressure.

Another impressive feature of the Ghostbed adjustable base has to do with its anti-snore preset. Just like with the other alternatives to the Sleep Number base, this model features dual USB ports and under-bed lighting. We have reviewed it extensively in ourbest adjustable bed frame guide.

An industry-leading 15 massage mode ensure luxurious relaxation. A non-skid surface coupled with a sturdy retainer bar keeps the mattress firmly in place.

The GhostBed adjustable base is available in three sizes the Split King, Queen and Twin XL.

Personal Comfort Beds Vs Sleep Number Beds

Personal Comfort and Sleep Number both have multiple choices for adjustable beds. However, Sleep Numbers beds are all equipped with their patented SleepIQ Smart Tracking Sleep Technology. Personal Comfort also has a line of Smart Beds, which is the version that will be compared in this article. Both companies have regular sales and clearances, so the price isnt too high when in comparison to what youd expect. The price listed is for a queen standard bed without split tops or bases.

Sleep Number Trial And Warranty

Sleep Number offers a 100-night trial that begins the day your new mattress arrives. The company asks that you give yourself 30 nights to adjust to your new mattress.

Sleep Number

Sleep Number has innovated over the years, from their firmness number technology and now their smart mattress and anti-snore features. With more smart technology than ever before such as sleep tracking and automatic adjustments of temperature and firmness, most sleepers find the Sleep Number 360 mattresses very interesting. However, durability is a concern for many customers with reports of some components wearing out faster than expected given the high prices.

Stearns And Foster

Stearns and Foster has been around for over 150 years with its last few decades being a part of the mattress conglomerate Tempur-Sealy along with brands like Tempur-Pedic and Sealy brands. With such a long legacy, they have become a recognizable name-brand known for luxury craftsmanship and high profile hybrid designs. With most customers experiencing the pillowy comfort they are known for, there have also been reports of durability concerns from customers over the recent years.

Based on our aggregated reviews and our scoring method, we recommend Sleep Number in this match up!

Design Benefits & Drawbacks

So what are the benefits and drawbacks between these particular mattress designs? First, lets start with Sleep Number. A primary benefit of their design is that sleepers are able to fully customize each side of the mattress to suit their individual sleeping preferences. This is a great feature for couples with vastly different sleep needs. For example, if youre a side sleeper that needs plush but theyre a back sleeper that prefers firm. Unlike any other type of mattress, the mattress itself is adjustable, not just the base.

However, one drawback of this design is the split in the center between the air chambers. If youre a bed hog or you like to sleep in the middle of the mattress, you may wake to find yourself sinking. For the same reason, some sleepers have found that they gradually roll towards the center of the mattress if theyre on the inner edge of the air chamber. Additionally, while Sleep Number Bed has less motion transfer than a traditional inner spring mattress, sleepers will still feel more of their partners movement than they would with a Tempur-Pedic or memory foam mattress.

Beautyrest Hybrid+ Advanced Motion Base

Beautyrest is available in a plethora of sizes, starting from twin to the California King. Its ideal for both lighter and heavier sleepers because it provides support up to medium firmness and 13.5-inches of thickness. Its a hybrid bed that will still have a sufficient amount of foam to accommodate any sleeping position, helping you achieve the optimal night rest. It is great for relieving pressure points on the spine and hips too.

It boasts Beautyrest Gel Memory foam that conforms to your curves and hugs you to sleep in any sleeping position possible. Given it boasts the gel beads, you wont feel hot or sweaty through the night, wont be waking up or turning.

As soon as you begin sleeping on this bed, the foam layer will adjust to your needs and demands. While most of the low-end memory foams are hot and uncomfortable, the InfiniCool system ensures that the sleeping surface is cool to the touch.

Lastly, the support system which gives the edge support and balance through the sleep consists of 1000 Series Firm Pocketed Coils that make even sitting on the edge comfortably.

Which Sleep Number Bed Is Best For Me

Before we jump into recommendations, its important to note that the experience of sleeping on an airbed can feel quite different from that of more traditional mattress styles, like all-foam or hybrid beds. If you love memory foam, for example, an airbed wont provide the same enveloping feeling you enjoy, regardless of how thick the comfort layers are.

Secondly, if you enjoy cuddling with your partner while you sleep, the dual air chambers may impede that and can feel uncomfortable. Lastly, these airbeds arent for people with a limited budget, considering the most affordable Smart Bed option starts at $999.

Sleep Number Brand And Reputation

The Sleep Number Corporation, based in Minneapolis, MN, manufactures Sleep Number beds in the United States. The company started life as the Select Comfort Corporation in 1987.

The main way that people can purchase a Sleep Number bed is through a Sleep Number store, of which there are more than 570 across all 50 states.

Regularly ranked highest in customer satisfaction with mattresses by J. D. Power, Sleep Number became an official Sleep + Wellness partner of the National Football League in 2018.

The company also offers consultations with sleep professionals, who can provide helpful guidance on how to sleep better.

According to company research, compared with those who slept on traditional innerspring mattresses, people who used a Sleep Number bed fell asleep faster, slept more deeply, had fewer sleep disturbances, and had more relief from back pain. However, no objective research supports these findings.

Sleep Number beds contain technology that measures a persons sleep data, including body position and temperature.

Sleep Number beds allow for automatic or manual customization of different sides of the mattress.

Which Frame Provides Enough Support For A Sleep Number Bed

Adjustable Air Beds

A traditional box spring on its own does not provide the adequate support needed for a sleep number bed. Your frame makes a big difference in the type of support your mattress provides.

The important question to ask is: could your bed frame support a mattress on its own, without a box spring? If so, then you could possibly use your box spring with the Sleep Number bed if you choose to. This is because the mattress will have enough extra support from your frame.

Here are the most common bed frames, and whether a traditional box spring might be feasible:

Collapsible metal frame: A collapsible metal frame doesnt have any extra support in the middle. A Sleep Number bed needs to be on a solid frame, or at least have slats. These frames would not be suitable.

Platform bed: If you have a platform bed, you do not need a box spring or foundation at all. These provide a solid base that replaces the need for a box spring. You probably could put a box spring underneath this mattress, but a wood foundation would be better if you need one.

Slatted bed frame: This is another frame that doesnt require a box spring or foundation. If the slats are close enough together, you may be able to use your box spring with this type of frame. Again, the wooden foundation works better here.

Sleepiq Vs Sleeptracker Ai

ReST Bed Review ( vs Sleep Number Comparison)!

Both have apps for Apple and Android devices, and both offer much of the same functionality. Sleep Numbers SleepIQ and Tempur-Pedics Sleeptracker AI can both monitor your movement, your heart rate, your breathing, and your sleep cycles. As a result, they can report on the quality of your sleep, wake you at the lightest stage of your sleep to reduce grogginess, and even adjust the bed tilt to reduce your partners snoring!

There are a few small differences worth mentioning. SleepIQ comes standard with every Sleep Number mattress even if some functions require one of their FlexFit bases. By contrast, Sleeptracker only comes packaged with Tempurs TEMPUR-Ergo and TEMPUR-Ergo Extend smart bases. However, it can be purchased separately for $299.

Do you have a smart home device like Alexa or Google Home in your home? If so, Tempur-Pedics Sleeptracker is definitely the better option for you, as SleepIQ isnt currently compatible with these devices.
