Sleep Number Bed Off Gassing

Sleep Number Mattress Pricing

How To Sleep at the Right Temperature

Sleep Number mattresses fall into the luxury mattress category. Website pricing for queen mattresses is $899 to $4,299, depending on the model. These prices dont include optional upgrades, like regular or adjustable bases.

Sleep Number mattresses are generally comparable to other luxury mattresses. A queen-size Sleep Number 360 pSE Smart Bed with an adjustable base, under-bed lighting, and a foot-warming feature is $5,198 before tax and shipping. Thats about the same price as a Tempur-Pedic mattress with similar options and upgrades.

Can You Move A Sleep Number Bed Without Taking It Apart

The answer is yes, particularly if you are moving the sleep number bed to another part of the room. But with the bed intact, you need help should you wish to carry it in another room. Remember to use the structural steel to hold and avoid holding on its foam, wooden, and plastic parts.

Still, it is best to remove the legs before carrying it to another room. The legs are strong enough to take weight pushing straight down but are not designed to take side force. Failure to remove the legs before carrying the bed may result in accidentally putting pressure that may bend them.

How Long Do Sleep Number Mattresses Last

According to Sleep Number, the mattresses should last at least 15 years. However, your mileage may vary. Some reviewers say the mattress lasted them about 10 years, while others say theyve had their Sleep Number for 20 years. Other reviewers report that the mattress didnt last them very long at all and that they experienced sagging issues.

Can You Avoid The Smell

If you want to limit your chemical exposure or you just dont want to deal with getting rid of the smell, start by looking for a mattress with a Certi-PUR certification. This organization tests mattresses and their seal means that a mattress uses very little or no VOCs. Their test also includes CFCs, phthalates, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and PBDEs, so your mattress will be free from those, as well.

Some people dont believe that Certi-PUR goes far enough to make sure mattresses are safe. In that case, you can look for the Green Guard or Made Safe certifications. You can also look for Global Organic standard ratings on the materials making up your mattress, to ensure that chemicals were not added during the manufacturing process.

If you want to avoid the issue altogether, there are a few mattresses out there made of wool and/or cotton. These naturally avoid the whole off-gassing problem.

Why I Passed On A Free Sleep Number Bed And What I Got Instead

Sleep Number Mattress Off Gassing

May 18 by Steph

Ive got to start today with a warning: this is a LONG post.

Its one Ive been wanting to write for a long time and is packed with so much good stuff that I just couldnt trim it.

I know its a lot but I really hope you do read it all! I have become so passionate about the importance of sleep especially for us parents who never seem to get enough!

Studies from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services show that if youre sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change

This is a BIG deal for all of us trying to maintain our cool with our kids and create a peaceful home.

Sleep has a big impact on our physical health too. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity.

Finally, actively prioritizing sleep for yourself and your family sets a critically important example for your kids and sets them down the path for better health too.

This is imperative because children and teens who are sleep deficient may have problems getting along with others. They may feel angry and impulsive, have mood swings, feel sad or depressed, or lack motivation. They also may have problems paying attention, and they may get lower grades and feel stressed.

Hopefully Ive convinced you about the importance of sleep!

What If You Cant Afford An Organic Mattress

The quick answer is there is no real solution, except to make it a priority to buy a safe and healthy mattress as soon as you can.

Sleep Number / Select Comfort Company Ratings & Analysis

The ratings below â based on consumer experiences and the evaluation of Sleep Like The Dead â show how Sleep Number compares to the average mattress manufacturer.

Warranty coverage D+ 25-year limited warranty, but owners overall give the warranty a below-average rating mainly because non-prorated coverage ends after year two of ownership. And some smart bed electronics have a 2-year total warranty. See Sleep Number warranty details.
Return policy D+ 100-day trial period which allows customer to â after 30 days â return the bed for an exchange or a 100% refund minus return shipping/delivery fee. The customer is responsible for preparing the bed components for shipping. As is often true for other brands, there are no returns or exchanges for adjustable bases, closeout or demo bed models.
Customer service C+ Sleep Number / Select Comfort customer service overall is considered by consumers to be generally similar to if not somewhat better than that of other major mattress makers.
This rating is determined by averaging the above company ratings.

Questions To Ask About Foam Mattresses

First, check where a company sources their foam. If it is made in the U.S. or EU it is subject to stricter safety regulations than foam made in many other regions and countries.

Second, look at how dense the foam is. Foam can range from around 2.5 lbs to more than 5.5 lbs per cubic foot. Foam under around 3 lbs is considered low density and can feel soft while still being comfortable. The other benefit of lower-density foam is that it contains lower amounts of polymers and, thus, uses fewer resources and has less to off-gas.

Finally, youll want to check how the mattress meets safety requirements for flammability. If a product is coated in chemical fire retardants, avoid it and look for one that has an outer cover made with something like Rayon, silica and Kevlar . These materials are far from eco-friendly, but they can help reduce the amount of chemicals that need to be applied for a mattress to meet fire safety standards.

Testing For Volatile Organic Compounds

Bedding by Sleep Number®

Volatile Organic Compounds are present in natural and synthetic materials. They are measured by collecting samples and being submitted for analysis in the lab by the use of certain techniques such as GC-MS. This process is meant to ensure that nothing harmful or toxic is present. There are various VOC indoor air quality certifications that a product can have to ensure that there arent dangerous levels of VOCs being emitted by the product:

  • Oeko-Tex Certification: This certification is used mainly in latex mattresses, but it is also a safety testing standard that tests for harmful substances that can come out of a mattress. It also tests for harmful VOCs.
  • Eco-Institut Certification: This is a certification that tests for harmful substances and VOCs. They also test for durability and natural latex content.
  • Greenguard Gold: This safety standard test ensures that there are low levels of harmful VOCs. This test is for a complete mattress rather than just one component.
  • Cradle to Cradle: This is a new certification that tests for harmful VOCs and environmental & social impacts of the process of production.
  • GOLS Certified: This is a new standard that applies more specifically to latex. This certifies that the latex is made with raw organic materials.

If you come across a mattress that has one or more of these certifications, its a keeper. It means that the bed is safe for sleeping and isnt going to release a harmful amount of VOCs or other chemicals.

Purple Mattress Off Gassing

Purple is one of the fastest-growing companies of all time, originally started through a crowdfunding campaign. They use a variety of different materials in their mattresses, but for those worried about VOCs and off-gassing, its important to note that it uses polyurethane foam just like the Leesa.

Polyurethane foam off gasses quite heavily and because the Purple is transported in a box and plastic wrap, it might need slightly longer to off-gas than a mattress shipped whole in a container without any compressed wrapping. For this reason, make sure to remove the plastic wrapping quickly, let it expand, and then lean it up against a wall to off-gas for 24 hours before use. .

Sleep Number Mattresses Pros And Cons

In a sense, Sleep Number mattresses are just like any other: The top section is the comfort layer, while the bottom section provides support.

But instead of using layers of supportive foam or an innerspring system, the bottom portion of a Sleep Number mattress features an adjustable air chamber. It can be inflated or deflated to your preferred level of firmness.

Unfortunately, Sleep Number doesnt disclose what the comfort layer is made of. Reviewers describe it as cushiony but not necessarily plush. Some Sleep Number mattresses have thicker comfort layers.

Which Type Of Mattresses Are Most And Least Likely To Off

As previously mentioned, the materials a mattress is made from will dictate the amount and duration of any off-gassing that may occur.

If youre worried about off-gassing, its worth seeking out an organic or natural mattress. Because these products use all-natural materials like latex, cotton, and wool, no VOCs will be used in the manufacturing process. That means no funky smells, a better nights sleep from day one, and a more environmentally friendly mattress.

Simple innerspring mattresses with little to no foam of any kind are also quick to lose any odor. This is because theyre essentially a hollow metal frame with a comfortable topping, and the main off-gassing culprit will likely be any fire protection elements. Be aware that the cheapest options may use polyfoam, though, which is notable for off-gassing.

Classic slow-moving memory foam mattresses may be a cheaper alternative to latex, but are more likely to off-gas thanks to their components. Some people have a sensitivity to the polyurethane used in memory foam manufacture if thats you, wed recommend choosing a latex alternative.

Basic polyurethane foam is the biggest off-gassing culprit. Usually made from petroleum-based materials, its cheap, light, relatively comfortable, and easily transported. However, mattresses that use polyfoam can emit more noxious gases , and they also simply dont last as long in use.

Very Good For Back Pain Relief

Sleep Number Mattress Off Gassing

One of the main reasons for why people spend a lot of time looking through Sleep Number bed reviews is because they are trying to find a mattress that would be suitable for back pain relief.

Yes, thats a thing. Let me explain.

When you sleep, your body is constantly pressuring the surface on which you are lying. Since the human body doesnt weigh the same all throughout, over time, you might start developing certain painful areas – places which are in a bigger amount of pressure while you sleep.

In order to avoid that , most mattress reviews state that you should find a mattress that would even out thepressure that your body applies to the surface area all throughout the bed. Memory foam is the material that is most famous for being used for this reason.

However, the same can also be said about air mattresses.

Reading and searching through the various Sleep Number bed reviews, youll notice that theres a significant number of people who are pretty happy with both the c2 and the c4 models, claiming that they can feel their back and neck pain dissipate after each and every night. Thats a great thing indeed!

Keep It Airing Outside To Boost Indoor Air Quality

One way to get rid of VOCs from your mattress is by unpacking the mattress outside of your home and getting the fumes of the VOCs to escape first.

When it’s time to bring it back in, put a fan nearby to let the fresh air circulate and crack a window or two open. The movement will help dissipate the fumes and spread them away from the mattress more efficiently.

Doing the step above should help release most VOCs from the mattress before carrying it inside your house. It may continue emitting the fumes for the next few days or weeks but at a lower level.

Are Coils Bad Stuff

There has been a lot of online chatter in recent years regarding metal coils in beds. We paid close attention to this and did some research, and arrived at the conclusion that steel springs present no known danger.

The bottom line is that there is no reason for concern. We simply cannot find any credible evidence showing that metal coils can act like an antenna and concentrate EMFs into our sleeping bodies.

What Is A Volatile Organic Compound

Wikipedia defines VOCs as volatile organic compounds are organic chemicals that have a high vapour pressure at ordinary, room-temperature conditions. Their high vapour pressure results from a low boiling point, which causes large numbers of molecules to evaporate or sublimate from the liquid or solid form of the compound and enter the surrounding air.

Put simply they are chemicals that can permeate the air at room temperature meaning they can be omitted from the material from which they are present. Paint is a perfect example that contains VOCs that off-gas almost immediately and will hang around for a limited amount of time.

Buying The Best Mattress: What To Look For

Les Pico: Total Wellness | Episode 2

Mattresses are subjective.

How firm or soft you find a mattress depends on a wide range of factors, including your weight, height, body shape, sleeping style, and body temperature.

That means that every mattresss comfort level is relative, so each person may gauge a firmness level differently.

What feels supportive and pressure-relieving to you may feel too firm to someone else, even if youre both side sleepers and about the same height and weight.

Keep this in mind when noting our firmness gauge, which ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest.

The only way to know whether a mattress is right for you is to sleep on it which is why all our selections here come with a risk-free trial.

If you dont like one, you can send it back and try another.

Can Movers Move A Sleep Number Bed

Movers can transport a sleep number bed. Initially, follow the procedures in disassembling a number bed, which includes taking down the frame and header. Place the parts and tools in a bag and tape it to the beds larger frame to keep it from getting lost during transport.

Remember to secure the Firmness Control System, Sleep Number Remote, and instructions. Packed these components in a box, and arrange their transportation to minimize shock and vibration.

The advantage of using a moving company is that they can move the mattress assembled and in a mattress box. This means you can leave the mattress fully inflated and capped off. The closure caps are necessary for moving a fully inflated mattress, specifically to avoid third-party charges.

Level & Flat Sleep Surface

About 20% of Sleep Number bed owners report a problem with the middle of the bed where the two air chambers meet.

Some owners say there is a “valley” or “trench” in the middle, while others report a “hump.” There also can be a problem with one or both sides of the bed sloping toward the middle which can cause a sleeper to roll or slide in that direction.

The middle area may be uncomfortable to lie on, and it can be less than friendly for intimate activities, including cuddling, spooning and sex.

Sleep Number customer service may have solutions to problems with the middle, such as a “lift” which is a piece of foam that is placed under the air chambers to raise the middle.

Problems with the middle of the bed tend to be reported mainly by owners who use very different firmness settings for each side of the bed, such as 90-20. It may also be a problem when both sides use a very low or very high firmness setting.
