Throwing Out Your Mattress
In some cases, you may not be able to donate or recycle your mattress. It may be that your mattress isnt fit for donation, or you cant find a recycling center close enough that will take it. For whatever reason, youre unable to donate, give away, recycle, or upcycle your mattress, theres always the option to throw it out.
However, it is often not as simple as just putting the mattress out on the curb. Many states, cities, and towns have specific ordinances and rules about throwing away mattresses, some of which prohibit putting a whole mattress in the trash. In those places, a curbed mattress may not be picked up on garbage day, and may result in a ticket or a fine.
The rules regarding garbage disposal vary, and you can find the rules for your state and city with a quick Google search. If you live in an area where you can, in fact, throw out a mattress with your regular trash, make sure to carefully read any additional rules to avoid fines and/or pickup refusal. In most places, you will be required to wrap your mattress in plastic, and in some places, you will be required to wrap the mattress in a specially made plastic mattress bag. To be safe, cover your mattress in plastic and seal it shut with packing tape.

Unplug The Firmness Control System
Since the connector hoses have already been removed, you can easily unplug this large white box unit from the wall or from underneath the bed for FlexFit bases. Likewise, make sure to disconnect all cables from the back. Once unplugged, you can secure the Firmness Control System, along with the remote, into a packing box and surround the box with packing material. For loose cables, secure them by wrapping and taping or tying them to the adjustable base.
It would be best if you still have the original box that the Firmness Control System came with to ensure a snug fit. If not, you can simply get a packing box from the store. The important thing is that the unit is protected from exposure to excess shock and vibration, which could result in damage.
The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series
The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.
Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.
I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.
The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.

Going with the C2 and adding my own bells and whistles
Very grateful for Candid Reviewer’s advice. We were interested in the C2 after seeing the excellent rating it received from Consumer Reports, with high marks for durability, side and back sleeping. We went to the sleep number store, stuck to our plan and avoided being up- sold, and bought both the recommended fiber topper and a gel topper to experiment with once the C2 arrives. We also are using our old metal frame with a queen-size bunkie board , for a nice savings compared to the $300 foundation from sleep number. More $ for new sheets and bedding!

Best bed I ever had. I’m a big person 300 Plus pounds…At year 10 the pump went out and I called…they still had my info and sold me a new pump at 1/2 price. It’s went through 2 moves and is still great! My husband is also big so it stands up to heavy folks. Folks on the phone were friendly and helpful. I’m looking now to buy my son one.

But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.
Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. Pack Up All Other Mattress Components
After setting aside the Firmness Control System and air chambers, proceed to box the comfort layer, foam side walls and base pad, and mattress cover. Make sure to place them into a double bag to prevent these mattress components from being soiled during transport. I suggest placing them in a sturdy box to help keep their shape intact. When moving house, never put heavy boxes on top of this package.

All you will need are Sleep Number closure caps to move your mattress in one piece. These air chamber/closure caps are small white plastic caps that come with your bed.
You will find them in your mattress at the top of your bed or the foot of your bed by the Firmness Control System if you have a smart bed. If you cannot find them or have lost the caps, you can visit any Sleep Number store or order from authorized Sleep Number distributors online.
When moving your bed, it is essential to fill the mattress on both sides to 100. Afterward, you can disconnect the hoses from your mattress and attach the air chamber caps. For FlexFit 3 bases, disconnecting foot-warming connections located near the hose connections is required. Once you have capped off the connector hoses on the mattress, you need to detach the mattress from the base and bag it. Next, you need to disconnect and box your pump . Finally, you need to separate your bases and remove your beds legs for easier clearance through doorways.
