The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series
The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.
Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.
I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.
The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.
Sleep Number C2 Mattress Feel
The c2 mattress is on the firm end of the Sleep Number spectrum, mainly because it does not come with a Comfort Foam cover. Another way to understand firmness level is by looking at the model number. The higher the number, the more more cushion/thicker layer each mattress will have.
However, reviewers and testers have noted if you like things on the softer end, you can might consider buying a separate mattress pad to add some additional cushioning if you prefer a softer or more plush sleeping surface.
If you share the bed or just find yourself rolling over to the edge, the c2 ensures youll be supported well and wont feel like youre about to fall off. Thats because the c2 is also known for having great edge support due to four foam border walls that are part of the bed. Typically, Sleep Number and air beds are known for having better edge support versus memory foam and latex mattresses because of these foam walls.
A handful of customers also spoke about c2s motion transfer. They said the bed does a good job at feeling sturdy and stableaka it has little motion transferso youre less likely to be bothered if your partner tends to toss and turn at night. For some comparison, memory foam mattresses also do a great job of transferring little motion, while beds that have flexible coil springs in their box spring are the most known for having motion transfer issues.
The Sleep Number Innovation Series
The Innovation Series is Sleep Numbers highest-end, plushest line. Although these mattresses arguably dont feel as plush as most foam or innerspring mattresses of similar price, the beds in this line actually feel like nice mattresses. If I were set on a Sleep Number mattress and could afford to do so, Id spend more for the Innovation lines added cushioning. But for someone like my husband, who just wants something adjustable and comfortable enough to sleep on, a less-expensive p6 would do just fine.
The i8 comes with 6 inches of foam and a temperature-balancing surface , and it felt pleasantly pillowy. The i10, with its additional inch of foam, was just a tad fluffier. Like the pSE from the companys Performance line, the iLE is not a typical fixture in-store, and it, too, has the ClimaTemp foam, described by the company as softer and more cooling.

Sleep Number 360 C2 Smart Mattress
The Sleep Number 360 c2 is an air bed that adjusts to your preferred firmness level, so you can find the perfect firmness for your body type and sleeping position. It comes with a remote so that you can adjust the amount of air with just a click.
The difference between the two mattresses is 1 inch of thickness. The c2 has a 2-inch layer in the top comfort layer made of gel-infused foam on top of the 6-inch air chamber layer. The c4 has a 3-inch layer. Also, the c4 has zoned support in the comfort layer, meaning its less dense to contour to hips and shoulders or more dense to support the neck or lower back. The Classic line beds are the most affordable you will find at Sleep Number.
Which Sleep Number Bed Is Best For Me
Before we jump into recommendations, its important to note that the experience of sleeping on an airbed can feel quite different from that of more traditional mattress styles, like all-foam or hybrid beds. If you love memory foam, for example, an airbed wont provide the same enveloping feeling you enjoy, regardless of how thick the comfort layers are.
Secondly, if you enjoy cuddling with your partner while you sleep, the dual air chambers may impede that and can feel uncomfortable. Lastly, these airbeds arent for people with a limited budget, considering the most affordable Smart Bed option starts at $999.

Owner Review Feedback For Sleep Number Mattresses
Sleep Number mattresses are typically purchased directly from Sleep Number, so thats where we found the majority of the online reviews. Out of the 34 good-quality negative user reviews we collected about the Classic Series , 10 contained complaints about issues related to a lack of cushioning. This included reviewers describing the mattress as too firm, too thin, bottoming out, or having poor pressure relief. Several reviewers pointed out that the c series is especially problematic for heavier-weight sleepers, and others noted the support felt better once they added a mattress topper.
For negative feedback on the Performance Series, we found far fewer complaints related specifically to the mattress thinness . But four out of 26 good-quality negative Innovation Series reviews noted that the mattresses were too firm or offered poor pressure relief. Perhaps this is to be expected, given that these users paid much more for their mattresses and therefore expected more. Three out of the six Cooling Memory Foam owners complained that their mattresses were either too thin, too firm, or lacked pressure relief.
Why Would Someone Pick This Model Over The Other Sleep Number Mattresses
The I-LE is a great mix of foam comfort, contoured support, and cooling features. Those who sleep hot and who like sleeping on beds that provide a good amount of cushion would like the I-LE mattress.
Those who like the premium I-10 mattress, but want more size options or are considering purchasing a bed with a single air chamber, could definitely choose the I-LE.
The I-LE mattress is very similar to its sister models, the I-8 and the I-10 mattress and is priced right in the middle of the two at $5299.00 for a Queen size.
The decision to choose this mattress over the others will really come down to the details and personal preferences. The I-LE offers thicker and denser foam layers made with breathable material to keep people cool, supported and most of all comfortable all night.

What We Think About Sleep Number Mattresses
In general, we think you can get a more comfortable mattress for a lot less. But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.
Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. However, these features are available only with the companys adjustable bases , which cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen.
Heres how the mattresses themselves compare to one another:
Sleep Trial And Returns
One of the main reasons that buying online is different from in-store is that you dont have the ability to lie down on the bed before making your purchase. Instead, you have a sleep trial during which you can use the mattress at home with the option to return it for a refund.
Most customers appreciate an in-home sleep trial because they can test out the mattress in real-world conditions for an extended time. This gives a clearer sense of whether a mattress works for you than just feeling it out for 15 minutes in a mattress store. During the trial, you can return the mattress if you arent satisfied, and that usually entails the company sending someone to pick it up from your home.
Both Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number provide a sleep trial with their mattresses.
- Tempur-Pedic gives customers 90 nights to try the mattress at home. You are required to keep the mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return. If you decide that you dont want to keep it, there is a $175 charge for return shipping.
- Sleep Number gives customers 100 nights for a sleep trial and requires that you keep it for 30 nights before initiating a return. The return shipping charge for Sleep Number beds ranges from $199 to $249.

Making Sense Of Sleep Number
Sleep Number offers two lines of mattresses: the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line and the Sleep Number Value Bed line.
The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line consists of four series, most of which include several models:
From a design standpoint, Sleep Number 360 Smart Beds and Value Beds are similar to any other mattresses: Each contains an upper comfort portion made of foam layers and a lower support portion. Instead of the foam or springs found in the lower support portion of conventional mattresses, in Sleep Number mattresses, that support portion consists of an adjustable air chamber and a support pad. These air chambers make it possible for couples to independently adjust firmness levels to their own liking. Theres also a sleep tracker inside the bed.
Heres how the key components work:
The air chamber allows you to adjust the firmness level of the mattressyour sleep settingsby filling the chamber with more or less air. The settings range from 5 to 100 you can adjust them in increments of 5 using the SleepIQ app on your phone or tablet, or with a remote . With the 360 Smart Beds, the tissue-boxsized pump is incorporated into a base , which pairs with the mattress. If you dont purchase the base, the pump will sit on the floor.
Sleep Number Bed Weight
Although the Sleep Number bed weight limit is quite high, it is relatively lighter than conventional mattresses. This is because the mattress is significantly composed of air. Depending on the bed size, Sleep Number mattresses weigh between 37 lbs to 120 lbs. Because of its low Sleep Number bed weight and the convenient assembly and disassembly of its parts, it is also easier to handle, transport, and move around.

Is The Sleep Number C2 Right For You
Now that weve broken down the ins and outs of the c2, here are the main reasons this mattress might be a great fit for you:
- You sleep on your back or side. If youre a stomach sleeper, you should probably avoid the c2. Its just too firm to support a belly sleeper. That said, many reviewers, gave it rave reviews for people who need extra firm support if they sleep on their back or side.
- Youre on a budget. While this mattress definitely isnt cheap, its more affordable than the other Sleep Number options. Considering it is adjustable and comes with a warranty makes the price seem reasonable.
- You sleep with a partner. Who can forget this bed adjusts on either end! If you sleep with a partner you no longer have to worry about fighting over the best mattress for both of you, given you can each adjust the firmness on your side to your liking.
- You dont mind dealing with technology. I said it many times and Ill say it again: there are a lot of extras that come with the c2. While theyre all fairly straightforward and durable, you might need to be good at troubleshooting problems. If youre not technology-inclined, this might not be your best bed option.
What To Look Forward To
In 2022, Sleep Number is releasing its Climate 360 Smart Bed, which is said to be responsive to both temperature and firmness preferences. The company says the bed will have sensors to measure sleep-tracking data like your heart, heart-rate variability, and breathing rate. Among other features, the mattress will automatically adjust firmness in response to your movements, and warm or cool the bed based on your body temperature. Sleep Number also now offers a kids bed.

What Is A Sleep Number
A Sleep Number is a setting on how soft or firm you want your bed to be. The numbers usually range between 1-100, with firmer mattresses in the higher spectrum. Being adjustable and customizable, you can choose the settings through a button or by syncing the app on your phone and adjusting it from there. This customization is possible thanks to the air chambers connected to a hose that you can pump to increase or decrease the air within them to your preferred firmness. The air chambers typically have a weight limit of 400 pounds each. Depending on its size, a bed can either have one or two air chambers.
Based on surveys, most users prefer Sleep Numbers within the 35-45 range, which provides enough firmness for ample support and pressure relief.
