Sleep Number Bed P5 Reviews

Sleep Number 360 P5 Smart Mattress

Pros and Cons: Sleep Number P5 bed Review

The p in this models title stands for Performance and the 5 stands for the number of body zones the mattress targets. The performance series is different from other Sleep Number models because their mattresses are pillowtop style, meaning theres an added layer of soft padding stitched to the mattress top. Sleep Number calls this their comfort layer, which is specifically designed to relieve pressure points. The most popular model in the Performance series is the P-5, thanks to its reputation for balancing firmness and contoured cushion to a T, along with having a reasonable price point.

A Mattress For Every Type Of Sleeper

The 360 Smart Bed is available in a number of iterations and sizes. You can choose between full-split, top-split, and no-split mattresses, depending on whether you sleep alone or with a partner, in sizes ranging from twin to California king. Prices start at $1,399 and go as high as $5,699 for the mattress itself adding a base costs extra.

We tested a full-size, no-split p5 mattress with a FlexFit 1 base. With home installation and delivery included, it came to a total of $3,896.62. The p5 is a medium-support mattress with a four-inch comfort layer and a profile height of 10 inches. More premium models, like the i8 and i10, come with higher profiles and thicker comfort layers, and are made of cooling materials. You don’t have to buy a base , but keep in mind that you can’t use these mattresses with box springs.

Trial Period And Returns

Sleep Number gives you 100 nights to test drive their beds. There are a lot of moving parts built into a Sleep Number bed. We would recommend you take 30 nights of sleeping before deciding whether to keep any mattress. We would recommend taking at least that amount of time for the Sleep Number. You may need some time to figure out which number/firmness at which you sleep most comfortably.

If you decide the mattress, or any of the individual layers, doesnt work for you, just initiate a return within 100 days. Sleep Number has to authorize it before you can expect a return. Once you initiate a return, you have 30 days to get it back to Sleep Number. You will pay to return your mattress. After all of that, and after your returns have arrived at Sleep Number, youll have to wait 21 days for your refund.

But you can exchange your mattress for an upgrade or downgrade. Youll have to pay the difference for the upgrade. Youll get a refund of some portion of the difference if you choose a lower-priced model.

Owner Review Feedback For Sleep Number Mattresses

Sleep Number mattresses are typically purchased directly from Sleep Number, so thats where we found the majority of the online reviews. Out of the 34 good-quality negative user reviews we collected about the Classic Series , 10 contained complaints about issues related to a lack of cushioning. This included reviewers describing the mattress as too firm, too thin, bottoming out, or having poor pressure relief. Several reviewers pointed out that the c series is especially problematic for heavier-weight sleepers, and others noted the support felt better once they added a mattress topper.

For negative feedback on the Performance Series, we found far fewer complaints related specifically to the mattress thinness . But four out of 26 good-quality negative Innovation Series reviews noted that the mattresses were too firm or offered poor pressure relief. Perhaps this is to be expected, given that these users paid much more for their mattresses and therefore expected more. Three out of the six Cooling Memory Foam owners complained that their mattresses were either too thin, too firm, or lacked pressure relief.

How Do I Find My Sleep Number

Sleep Number Performance Bed Review (p5, p6 and pSE ...

It might be an all-too-obvious play on words, but every Sleep Number mattresses come with a sleep number for their customers. This number is an actual digit between 1-100 that indicates what level of firmness you want your bed to be. If you choose 1, you would feel like youre sleeping with practically no support, and if you choose 100, your bed would be incredibly hard. These extreme sleep numbers are pretty much non-existent for users most people have a sleep number between 30 and 60.

You can find your sleep number at one of their retail store showrooms, or do it at home. Either way, you can always adjust your sleep number, so it never becomes a permanent thing. If youre doing it at home, follow these instructions:

  • Lie on your mattress in your preferred sleeping position
  • Press any button on the remote to activate it, and press the up or down arrow to increase or decrease air pressure, hence adjusting your number.
  • If youre in a dual-chamber bed, the screen will say either left side or right side. Follow the screen prompts to change sides if you need, and use the arrows on the remote control to activate the pump from the left or right side of the mattress.

Its Simple But Is It Useful

My first few nights with the bed were fascinating. Every morning I woke and checked the SleepIQ app, which gave me a SleepIQ score and showed when I was restless or had left the bed. It wasnt hard to connect the dots between restless nights and the previous days activities.

Drinking a late coffee kept me tossing and turning longer than normal, just as studies suggest. Downing a few beers late in the evening or even a full glass of water was a surefire way to have a good nights rest interrupted by my bladder at 3 a.m.

That information led me to correct my habits. I dont drink coffee as late as I used to, and I try to avoid drinking much of anything after 9 p.m. So, have those changes improved my sleep?

    WellI dont know.

You can change how the bed feels on each side for whatever level of comfort you, or partner, prefer.

The app has a historical graph of my SleepIQ score, which bobs and weaves and averages out to 81. Thats better than average, according to the graph, which seems good. Yet changing my habits hasnt improved my sleep. My average in September was lower than August.

Am I more stressed? Have I changed how I eat? Has my cat become more insistent in asking for a midnight snack? Or is the slight change about five points not enough to be relevant?

    If Youre Spending This Much

Sleep Number is fighting at a premium price point against competitors like Serta, Tempur-pedic, Leesa, and Lull, to name a few. Yet very few competitors offer smart features. Those that do are smaller companies selling at eye-popping prices. Eight might be the only serious alternative, and it sells for less.

Maybe you dont need a smart bed, but if youre going to spend this much for a mattress, its a nice bonus one very few competitors offer. Don’t Miss: What Are Sleep Number Beds Made Out Of

    Making Sense Of Sleep Number

Sleep Number offers two lines of mattresses: the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line and the Sleep Number Value Bed line.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line consists of four series, most of which include several models:

From a design standpoint, Sleep Number 360 Smart Beds and Value Beds are similar to any other mattresses: Each contains an upper comfort portion made of foam layers and a lower support portion. Instead of the foam or springs found in the lower support portion of conventional mattresses, in Sleep Number mattresses, that support portion consists of an adjustable air chamber and a support pad. These air chambers make it possible for couples to independently adjust firmness levels to their own liking. Theres also a sleep tracker inside the bed.

Heres how the key components work:

The air chamber allows you to adjust the firmness level of the mattressyour sleep settingsby filling the chamber with more or less air. The settings range from 5 to 100 you can adjust them in increments of 5 using the SleepIQ app on your phone or tablet, or with a remote . With the 360 Smart Beds, the tissue-boxsized pump is incorporated into a base , which pairs with the mattress. If you dont purchase the base, the pump will sit on the floor.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series

Sleep Number P5 Modular Base King Mattress Set

The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.

Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.

I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.

The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.

Is The Sleep Number 360 P5 Smart Bed Right For You

Now that youve learned everything about the 360® p5, heres a handy summary to understand if its a good choice for you:

    • Youre a back sleeper. The p5 is one of Sleep Numbers most popular bed, and for good reason. While its medium-firmness makes this bed alluring for different types of sleepers, its especially a good fit if you sleep on your back, striking a great balance of comfort and support, especially due to the five zones of contouring support.
    • You experience chronic pain. If youre someone who has dealt with chronic pain, this might be a good bed option for you since many reviewers said it helped alleviate ongoing aches and ailments. >
    • You dont typically sleep hot. If you get hot in the middle of the night, its probably best to stay away from this bed since it doesnt include any features that help the bed self-cool. That said, if this is a non-issue for you, the p5 could be a safe purchase.
    • You appreciate technology. This goes for all Sleep Number beds in the smart series, but if youre someone who appreciates and wants to take advantage of technology to sleep better, this is a great option. And since the p5 is the cheapest of the smart bed series, it could be a great place to start.

Is Sleep Number P5 Worth the Price?

PinAs you can see, the p5 and pSE are both 10 thick whereas the p6 is the thickest at 11. As you can see, this 1 difference is due to the extra thick comfort layer. It is this additional inch that also makes the p6 softer than the other two. Cross compare this image with the previous one and youll appreciate that the thickness of the comfort layer is directly proportional to the softness/firmness of the different mattresses.
