University Of Maryland School Of Medicine Research Shows That Older Patients With Untreated Sleep Apnea Need Greater Medical Care

Older Patients with Untreated Sleep Apnea Cost Nearly $20,000 More a Year and Saw More Hospitalizations, New Research Shows
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common and costly medical condition leading to a wide range of health risks such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and even premature death. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that the medical costs are substantially higher among older adults who go untreated for the disorder.
The research, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, involved a review of a national sample of Medicare claims data. The researchers measured the health care costs over a year among Medicare beneficiaries who were 65 years and older and were ultimately diagnosed with OSA. They found that patients who went undiagnosed with OSA over a 12-month period had more doctorâs appointments, emergency room visits, and hospital stays prior to being treated for the disorder. These patients on average had nearly $20,000 more in costs a year than those who were diagnosed and treated for OSA, the research found.
Medical costs among those untreated for OSA will continue to rise, he warned, highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment among older adults.
The research is critical as OSA affects up to 70% of elderly nursing home residents, and these individuals are at higher risk of death.

For sleep study appointments scheduled at our Sleep Disorders Center, youll get a reminder call from us two days beforehand. The day of your study, well call again to confirm your appointment. If you wont be able to keep your appointment, please call us at least 24 hours in advance at .
Your sleep study takes place overnight. If your study is performed at our Sleep Disorders Center, additional daytime testing may be required depending on your results. You should plan to stay at the Sleep Disorders Center until 5 p.m. the following day.

EASTON As part of an ongoing commitment to promote infant safe sleep practices, the Birthing Center at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton has adopted the HALO SleepSack in-hospital safe sleep modeling program.
Each year in the United States, approximately 3,500 infants die from sleep-related deaths, many of which are preventable, said Angie Wicks, nurse manager of the Birthing Center at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton.
The use of HALOs in-hospital safe sleep modeling program allows the Birthing Center to replace loose hospital blankets with a free, wearable blanket called a SleepSack. Recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the SleepSack is a swaddling blanket that helps babies sleep better because they stay warm as they cannot kick the blanket off. More importantly, the SleepSack wearable blanket eliminates the need for loose blankets that can cover a babys face and interfere with breathing, and also helps reduce the risk of overheating during nap time and bedtime.

What To Expect During A Sleep Study
When you arrive at the UM Sleep Center, located on the UMMC Midtown Campus, you will meet with a sleep technologist who will explain and conduct the sleep study.
For studying the quality of sleep, various sensors and electrodes will be applied to the head, nose, and fingers. These electrodes and sensors are able to measure up to 16 different body movements at the same time. This information will be relayed to the sleep technologist who will be monitoring your sleep. In addition, all patients are videotaped while asleep.
- Electrodes are applied to the scalp, sides of the head and under the chin, chest and leg. This lets us measure brain waves, heart rate, and eye movements.
- A sensor is placed by the nose and mouth for measurement of airflow.
- Belts are placed around the rib cage and abdomen for measurement of breathing movements.
- A clip is placed on a finger for measurement of blood oxygen levels.
Patients generally get out from the study around 6:30 to 7 am. However, if an earlier wake-up is needed, the patient just needs to let the technologist know.
Once the sleep study is completed, it will be assessed, scored, and sent to a sleep specialist for interpretation. This entire process takes 7-10 days. The interpretation is then sent to the physician who ordered the sleep study and appropriate follow-up is arranged.
University Of Maryland Shore Regional Health Sleep Disorders Centers Receive Program Reaccreditation
EASTON The University of Maryland Shore Regional Health Sleep Disorders Center at UM Shore Medical Center in Easton recently received program reaccreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Both the Sleep Disorders Center at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester and at UM Shore Medical Pavilion at Queenstown also received program reaccreditation, in December 2020. All three programs have been reaccredited for five years.
As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research. To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep centers goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

Techniques For Developing Good Sleep Hygiene
- Try to go to sleep at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning.
- Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol late in the day, as they can interfere with sleep.
- Get regular exercise and finish any rigorous exercise more than 3 hours before bedtime.
- Avoid all screens an hour before bed. The light from the screens stimulates the brain and body and can make it difficult to fall asleep.
- Try not to eat any heavy meals within a few hours of bedtime.
- Use your bed only for sleep or sex. If after 15 minutes, you cant fall asleep, get out of bed and do something non-stimulating, such as reading, to help you feel tired.
- Avoid napping during the day. This can make it difficult to fall asleep at night, perpetuating the poor sleep hygiene cycle.
- Avoid staying up all night- this disrupts your sleep schedule and can be difficult for your body to recover.
- Make your bedroom comfortable for sleeping by making it dark and quiet , adjusting the temperature, and getting comfortable bedding.
- Avoid falling asleep with the TV or radio on.
- If racing thoughts impact your ability to fall asleep, try writing down your thoughts.
- Developing a soothing bedtime routine, such as reading a book, listening to music, practicing relaxation exercises, or taking a bath.
- If you frequently look at the clock at night, face it in the other direction. Clock-watching can make it more difficult to fall asleep.
