Are Calories Burned While Sleeping Equal To Basal Metabolic Rate

How Many Calories Do You Burn Sleeping?

Zhang and associates measured calories burned while sleeping , Total Daily Energy Expenditure , and Resting Metabolic Rate in 18 healthy, pre-menopausal, obese, and non-obese female subjects .

Their ages ranged from 22 years to 45 years.

They took the measurements using a human respiratory chamber.

They reported that SMR decreased continuously during sleep and reached its lowest level in the early hours before the subject awakened in the morning.

They also reported that Sleeping Metabolic Rate tended to be significantly higher than Resting Metabolic Rate at the beginning of the sleep period. But it decreased during the night until it fell to a minimum below RMR in the early hours before waking.

According to the researchers, the rate of decrease of SMR after the beginning of the sleep period increased with increasing body weight and body mass index . Thus, while averages of SMR and RMR were similar, average SMR tended to be lower than RMR in obese subjects but higher than RMR in non-obese subjects.

Seale and Conway measured Overnight Energy Expenditure and BMR of 69 adult subjects in a room-sized indirect calorimeter. They reported that although energy expenditure dropped significantly below BMR during sleep, Overnight Energy Expenditure and BMR were equal.

According to the researchers, energy expenditure dropped significantly below BMR for about 60 minutes during sleep. However, Overnight Energy Expenditure was equal to BMR.

How Your Body Uses Calories While You Sleep

Many people are surprised to discover how many calories we burn while sleeping. Although sleeping requires far less energy than most daytime activities, its still an active period for our brain and certain other bodily functions.

The exact number of calories burned sleeping depends on a complex interplay between sleep, diet, exercise, and other variables. If you are having trouble with weight management or energy levels, an understanding of the factors that influence metabolism may help you regain control of your health.

Calculate How Many Calories Do You Burn While Sleeping

Understanding how many calories do you burn while sleeping is achieved by calculating the BMR. However, Accurate BMR calculation requires specific equipment that determines precisely how much oxygen a person is breathing, inhaling, and exhaling over a certain period.

But using the Harris-Benedict equation, it is possible to get the nearly accurate BMR:

This equation takes a persons sex, age, weight, and height into account.

Females, the formula is:

BMR = 665.1 + ) + ) )

Example :

BMR of 26 year female, height 53 and weight- 165

BMR = 665.1 + + = 1522.8 kcal/day.

Males, the formula is:

BMR = 66.47 + ) + ) )

Example :

BMR of 26 years Male, height 57 and weight- 170

BMR = 66.47 + + = 1790kcal/day

The formula will give the count of how many calories do you burn in a day due to BMR alone.

What Factors Affect The Basal Metabolic Rate

The basal metabolic rate varies from person to person depending on a number of factors, only some of which can be changed:

  • Fitness: Muscle burns more calories than fat, so people who are fit and regularly active burn more calories, even while at rest.
  • Gender: Men generally have a higher BMR than women because they tend to have a higher proportion of repair and regenerate.
  • Age: Growing children have a higher metabolism, but metabolic needs decrease as we age.
  • Diet: Sticking to a healthy diet can help manage body fat composition.
  • Sleep Quality: Poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep have a detrimental effect on metabolism.
  • Race: Some studies show that African-Americans may have a naturally lower BMR.
  • Genetics. Genetics may influence metabolism to some extent.
  • Hormones and Medical Conditions: Pregnancy, lactation, menopause, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, and other conditions can raise or lower the basal metabolic rate. Consult your doctor if you believe an underlying condition could be affecting your metabolism.
  • Sleep Affects Weight In More Ways Than Just Nighttime Calorie Burn

While you are burning calories during sleep, there are other important ways that sleep affects what you weigh. When it comes to keeping the pounds in check, both the quality and quantity of your sleep are important.

A constant lack of Zs wreaks havoc on your hunger hormones, upping the amount of the appetite-stimulating ghrelin and decreasing the appetite-suppressing leptin in the body. Consuming calories is one compensatory mechanism for an under slept individual, says MH advisor W. Chris Winter, MD, a neurologist and sleep specialist, and author of sleep books including The Rested Child. In other words, youre prone to eating more. Not only that, but after just one sleepless night, research reveals that youre also prone to specifically eating more calorie-dense and high-fat foods.

Sleep affects other weight-regulating hormones as well. Yes, sleep deprivation, even short term, can result in insulin and glucose imbalances, says Kuljeet Gill, MD, a sleep medicine specialist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. Lack of sleep can also affect how balanced cortisol and your thyroid hormones are.

How To Calculate Your Calories Burned While Asleep

Calculating your precise basal metabolic rate requires the use of a calorimeter. A calorimeter measures the amount of energy you are consuming by analyzing the oxygen and carbon dioxide being inhaled and expelled from your body.

Usually, people who want to get the most accurate reading of their basal metabolic rate will spend the night in a laboratory, abstain from exercise for 24 hours, fast for 12 hours, and sleep for at least 8 hours prior to the reading. These details are important because digestion and exercise are energy-hungry processes that cause spikes in metabolism. The measurements are then carried out in the morning in a darkened, temperature-controlled setting.

Due to the expensive and complex nature of this test, its not practical for the average person to get one done. However, you can get a rough idea of your basal metabolic rate by using one of several equations. One of the most common is the Harris-Benedict equation, which is based on weight, height, age, and gender:

    Male: BMR = 66.5 + +

    Female: BMR = 655 + +

The result gives you your basal metabolic rate while awake over a 24-hour-period. To calculate approximately how many calories you burn per hour of sleep, divide the number by 24 to get the hourly rate, then multiply by 0.85 to account for the lower metabolic rate during sleep.

    Avoid Going To Bed Hungry

Health & Fitness : How Many Calories Do You Burn Sleeping?

Going to bed hungry does more harm than you could ever think. Failure to eat anything makes the body to go into starvation mode. It does this by reducing your metabolism thus conserving calories.

Although grabbing a tiny portion of snacks while hungry is fine, you need to make sure that your choices are healthy. High-fat snacks arent the best choices. Taking a piece of high-fiber cereal that contains skim milk wont add any extra calories.

The most important thing to do if you want to burn calories is to strictly eat something only when hungry. If you are not starving, you need to avoid taking a bedtime snack.

Why Does A Heavier Person Burn More Calories

A calorie is a unit of energy and a heavier body requires more calories to carry out basic physiological functions. This can mean doing absolutely nothing.

Think of it like how a larger vehicle typically uses up more fuel than a smaller one. Weight affects fuel consumption .

But this also means that the heavier person expends more calories in a rested state.

This is also known as metabolic rate or metabolism.

The calculator uses a formula to approximate resting calories burned and then it factors in the duration and activity to guesstimate total calories burned .

    Lower The Room Temperature

When youre cold, your body will need to burn more fuel to stay warm. And that fuel is calories. So, the colder it is, the more calories itll get rid of, hence the whole cold water thing earlier.

The best way to do it is to turn the thermostat down to 65 degrees while you sleep, your body will be doing all the work while youre off in dreamland.

Just be sure you dont put on too many clothes to stay warm. Otherwise, the only difference youll see is in your electric bill.

Combine Weight Lifting With Complex Carbs

How Many Calories Do You Burn While Sleeping?

Everyone says to avoid carbs. And, depending on the diet, they may be justified in saying so. But when you eat good carbs, you keep your muscles active. You have more of the right energy to, again, keep your metabolism fast and furious.

Heres how it goes. Lets say youre eating complex carbs that could be a bowl of whole-grain pasta or oatmeal. Your body breaks those carbs down into sugar to give you energy. If that sugar isnt used, it gets stored as fat.

But if youre lifting weights, the fuel is used as energy to keep going. Bodybuilders take in about 50% more carbs to fuel their workouts, and their metabolism is 14% faster than average.

Factors That Contribute To How Many Calories You Burn Sleeping

Its not clear if there are any lifestyle factors that directly influence how many calories you burn while sleeping that night. This number is based on your resting, or basal, metabolic rate . Your BMR represents the energy needed to keep your body functioning properly what you need to breathe, keep your heart beating, and repair cells, among many other roles. While your BMR is running day or night, as a whole, it accounts forabout 60% of the total calories your body burns in a day.

BMR is higher the more you weigh. People withmore muscle mass also have a higher BMR, as muscle is more metabolically active, so it burns more calories than fat. One of the more efficient ways to build muscle is by lifting weights and eating adequate protein. .

Another thing that can drag down BMR is dieting. When you cut calories in order to lose weight, your body conserves energy to make sure theres enough gas in the tank to take care of organ function. One recommendation is to moderately decrease calories while exercising in order to maintain BMR.

Sleep Better To Burn Extra Calories

We have done the math, and we can tell that one can burn calories anywhere between 200 and 600 calories each night. To increase calorie burning, try sleeping in a cool, calm, and darkroom. Cold Temperature helps to burn more calories to maintain the body temperature.

You can burn the most calories during REM sleep.

If youre struggling to get those seven hours each night, maintain a regular sleep schedule and limit electronic and television use before bed.

Does Rem Sleep Burn More Calories Than Non

Multiple studies confirmed that metabolic rate decreased during sleep and reached its lowest level in the early hours before the subject awakened in the morning.

The decrease in energy expenditure during sleep occurs as the subject moves through the different stages of the sleep cycle.

Fontvieille and associates noted that changes in SMR during sleep were due to different rates of energy expenditure associated with the different sleep stages.

The researchers conducted a study to assess the relationship between EE and sleep stages. The study involved 29 subjets of different ethnicities , gender , age, sex, and weight. Fontvieille and associates used electroencephalographic readings to determine sleep stages and measured EE using indirect calorimetry.

The authors reported that SMR was related to sleep stages. Metabolic rates decreased as subjects progressed through the three stages of non-REM sleep, but peaked during REM sleep .

However, the differences in energy expenditure between the sleep stages were not enough to account for differences in SMR between the subjects. The researchers reported that the differences in SMR between the subjects were due to differences in fat-free mass , fat mass, age, sex, and ethnicity.

Brebbia and Altshuler earlier reported significant differences in energy expenditure between the four stages of sleep, with REM sleep having the highest EE. Energy expenditure decreased as subjects progressed through the non-REM sleep stages .

How To Get More Rem Sleep

Calories Burned During Eight Hours of Sleep

We all know that a better nights rest is important for body function, mental health, and even weight loss. More REM sleep can lead to burning extra calories while you sleep. Here are a few tips to improve sleep quality:

    • Invest in the best mattress for your needs to promote a more comfortable, deeper nights sleep.
    • Keep to a schedule so you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
    • Exercise 20-30 minutes a day. But dont exercise within a few hours of going to sleep.
    • Avoid caffeine in the evening hours.
    • Shut off bright lights and digital glow, and put your phone on silent. Dont watch TV in bed. Reading a print book or magazine is much better than scrolling on your phone, tablet, or another device with stimulating blue lights. In a Harvard study, it took participants an average of 10 minutes longer to fall asleep using an e-book reader versus a print book. This is because the light emitted from your screen causes your body to suppress the hormone melatonin, which is vital to falling asleep.
    • If you cant get to sleep, dont just lay in bed awake. Move to the couch and read until youre tired.
