Select Comfort* Vs Air Beds Unlimited

Select Comfort® beds are the registered trademark name of a line of adjustable air beds manufactured by the Select Comfort® Corporation, which officially changed their Corporate name to Sleep Number® Corporation. Air Beds Unlimited does not sell or have any affiliation with the Select Comfort® or the Sleep Number® Brands! As opposed to the metal coils found in traditional innerspring mattresses, air bed mattresses are filled with simple air. In addition, the level of firmness provided by an adjustable air bed such as the ones manufactured by Select Comfort®/Sleep Number®, Air Beds Unlimited’s Air Mattresses can also be very easily adjusted to meet the specific comfort/support needs of the individual sleeping on them.

When it comes to air beds, Select Comfort®/Sleep Number® might be the most well known air bed manufacturer, due to the huge amount of advertising that they do, but it is certainly not the only one. There are several companies out there that have adjustable air beds you can buy. Not only are there airbeds out there that can be adjusted to suit your needs, many of the air beds will also allow your sleep partner to select the comfort level that is best for them. Air Beds like these are designed with dual air chambers as well as dual controls with digital readouts, so each person can adjust their individual side, to their perfect comfort level.

Making Sense Of Sleep Number

Sleep Number offers two lines of mattresses: the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line and the Sleep Number Value Bed line.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed line consists of four series, most of which include several models:

From a design standpoint, Sleep Number 360 Smart Beds and Value Beds are similar to any other mattresses: Each contains an upper comfort portion made of foam layers and a lower support portion. Instead of the foam or springs found in the lower support portion of conventional mattresses, in Sleep Number mattresses, that support portion consists of an adjustable air chamber and a support pad. These air chambers make it possible for couples to independently adjust firmness levels to their own liking. Theres also a sleep tracker inside the bed.

Heres how the key components work:

The air chamber allows you to adjust the firmness level of the mattressyour sleep settingsby filling the chamber with more or less air. The settings range from 5 to 100 you can adjust them in increments of 5 using the SleepIQ app on your phone or tablet, or with a remote . With the 360 Smart Beds, the tissue-boxsized pump is incorporated into a base , which pairs with the mattress. If you dont purchase the base, the pump will sit on the floor.

How Does It Feel To Sleep On An Airbed Mattress

Best Adjustable Airbeds

The feel of an airbed is distinct from that of other mattress types, and is best characterized by the following characteristics:

Adjustable Feel: Using manual, remote, or app-based controls, you can change the firmness level of your airbed from one feel to another in a matter of minutes. Softer feels mean the chambers have less air, so youll sink a bit beneath the surface, while a firmer feel will add air to the chamber and elevate your body.

Dual Firmness: Intended to benefit couples with differing preferences, most airbeds allow you to adjust each sides feel to reach a distinct firmness level. This can result in one side feeling much softer or firmer than the other.

Trench Effect: On some airbeds, you may feel a dip in the center of the mattress between the air chambers. Some dont mind this, but others find the trench effect disruptive to sleep.

Iffy Temperature Neutrality: Airbeds, like other mattress types, can sleep warm if their comfort layers are thick enough to absorb and trap body heat. Airbeds may also feel too cool if the comfort layer isnt substantial enough and your body comes into contact with the air chambers. That said, many airbed models are built with comfort layers that promote consistent temperature neutrality and will sleep neither too hot or too cold.

What Makes Them So Different

Both ReST and Sleep Number apps were fairly easy to use. The one issue we had with Sleep Number is the connectivity. The pump has to connect through the bluetooth/wifi and if the signal strength in your bedroom is not strong you could have issues. We had connectivity issues at least once a week, if not more. When that happened, it was a lengthy process of calling the Sleep Number support line and troubleshooting. Consider picking up a signal booster to circumvent this problem. On the other hand, ReST has its own built-in wifi on the pump so we didnt have any connectivity issues.

Soundasleep Cloudnine Air Mattress

The main selling point of a Classic Mattress from Sleep Number is the amount of adaptive pressure that you can get from the air in the chamber. The digital pumps and remote controls allow users to take the product up and down from different sleep numbers for a more adaptive comfort level. Of course, there arent that many products out there that can provide this sort of technology. Those that do arent all that affordable unless you opt for the model below.

The pros and cons of this Sleep Number alternative.

Pros:

  • The adjustable comfort levels in the inflation of the mattress
  • The size of the mattress for master bedrooms and guest rooms
  • The speed of the inflation process

Cons:

  • No padding like a traditional mattress
  • A risk of leaks

An alternative for those that really want to chance to adjust air pressure is to simply opt for an adjustable air mattress instead of a mattress that has the combination of the foam and the air chambers within. This model from SoundAsleep is a popular choice because of the smart pump that has three built-in comfort levels pre-set into its system. One pump inflates the mattress in 4 minutes and the other keeps a steady pressure at the chosen level. It is surprisingly comfortable and reliable as a queen-sized mattress.

Why is this product such a recommendable alternative to a Sleep Number product?

Sleep Number Innovation Series Vs Air

If youre interested in high-end airbeds, youve probably already taken a look at Sleep Numbers Innovation series. This mattress line includes the i8, i10, and iLE mattresses, which vary in their comfort layers and firmness options but are top-of-the-line with specialized construction for pressure relief, support, cooling, and sleep tracking.

Air-Pedic offers many adjustable airbeds, but the Air-Pedic 800, 850, 1000, and 1100 are most comparable to the Sleep Number Innovation line in price, construction, height, cooling technology, and luxury features. Air-Pedic airbeds have longer warranties and sleep trial periods, and the Air-Pedic 800 has often been compared to the Sleep Number i8.

What You Need To Know About Sleeping On An Airbed

IDLE Air Adjustable Mattress Review and Comparison to Sleep Number Beds!

Airbeds offer a unique experience for sleepers that sets them apart from other mattress types. Unlike innersprings that feature steel coils or memory foam or latex mattresses with polyfoam-based support cores, airbeds are constructed with internal air chambers that can be adjusted by adding or removing air with an electric pump, resulting in customized firmness and support.

Older airbeds feature manual adjustment controls, but many newer models can be adjusted remotely using a portable controller or smart app technology.

The availability of airbeds is somewhat limited compared to innersprings, hybrids, memory foam, and latex mattresses. Additionally, the price-points of most airbeds are significantly above-average.

However, airbeds tend to earn above-average customer satisfaction ratings, due in large part to their customizable controls and long lifespans, as well as pain- and pressure-relieving abilities. The adjustable controls also make them suitable for side, back, and stomach sleepers.

Airbeds vs. Air Mattresses

Its important to note that the term airbed refers to a mattress used as the primarily sleep surface in bedrooms and guest rooms. Airbeds are different from temporary air mattresses that are commonly used for camping or floor-sleeping. This review will only discuss airbeds designed for primary sleep, and not temporary air mattresses.

Leesa With Adjustable Base

An incredible choice for hot, back and side sleepers, theLeesa with Adjustable Base is a popular and comfortable all-foam mattress. It brings with it an excellent balance of support and comfort making it a highly versatile choice for various types of sleepers.

Although it is all foam, it does a remarkable job of sleeping cool. Leesa utilizes a proprietary and high-quality LSA200 foam on its top comfort layer. The material is simultaneously responsive, breathable, bouncy and soft.

Under the top layer of foam is another one featuring slower-moving memory foam for more body contouring. The comfort layers are handy in creating a balanced foam feel that’s responsive and soft for the utmost pressure relief without getting stuck in the mattress.

While the memory foam and LSA200 foam is soft, its support layer is extremely firm making the mattress not-too-soft and not-too-firm.

Back sleeping on the mattress gives users a balance of support and comfort while the bottom base foam layer offers excellent overall support.

In terms of cover, the mattress has a breathable and soft cover made of twill fabric.

Do Most Airbed Mattresses Include A Sleep Trial

Best Adjustable Airbeds

Customers should take note that most airbed manufacturers offer sleep trials for their mattresses. Sleep trials allow customers to test out their mattress for a set number of nights and if they choose return the airbed for a partial or full refund. All of our best airbed mattress picks offer sleep trials of 90 nights or longer.

Airbeds with a sleep trial of at least 60 nights might be a good option for customers who are unsure whether they want to commit to owning an airbed. Most sleep trials carry a mandatory break-in period of at least 20 to 30 nights customers cannot return their mattress during this period for a refund.

Manufacturers may also require customers to cover shipping and handling fees associated with returning their mattress during the sleep trial.

Patented Airflow Transfer System

If your body type generates extra heat or you just want to sleep cooler, all our memory foam beds come with the option of adding on our patented Airflow Transfer System, which allows cooler air to flow in two directions even when you sleep in the same position all night. Cooler air will enter through the many small holes that go down through the surface of the memory foam and out through the convoluted channels on the firmer base foam.

It also works in reverse, as air can enter through the sides and up through the surface holes. This unique system also allows a heat transfer as the warmer air radiates off the body and ventilates down through the holes and out the sides of the mattress. That is why we always use a breathable fabric where the channels exit on the sides of the mattress. In addition, a greater volume of airflow transfer will occur with even the slightest movements that occur throughout the sleeping process. While some mattress companies offer airflow through the middle layer of the mattress, they fall short of allowing the mattress user to receive any airflow benefit.

Airflow Transfer System® is protected by U.S. Patent No. 7,334,280.

Our Top Sleep Number Bed Alternatives

The mattresses we take a look at right below are our three picks for the most similar to the Sleep Number variant. What this means is sleep features are near-identical, as is expected sleep quality, technology, and build quality.

Well start with the incredible Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt, thanks to its smart features and customization controls. The mattress has loads of adaptive settings as well as firmness control and more.

The best part of the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt is that it offers ideal pressure point support based on its outstanding material quality. Youll find one of the industrys softest top layers inside the Tempur-Pedic called the TEMPUR-ES® Comfort Layer, allowing you to sink well into the top of the mattress for ideal pressure support and that floating feeling.

Below the comfort, the layer is the TEMPUR-APR Support Layer, which ensures youre not going to sink too deep or be left to deal with a sore lower back or any other joint pain.

To add to the feature set, there is movement isolation, which makes sure that no matter how often you move about, you wont be shaking your partner awake.

Adjustable Bases Vs Smart Beds

As we noted above, smart beds appeal to many people because they offer customizations and extra functions beyond a standard mattress. But buying a smart bed isnt the only way to make your sleep setup more customizable. You might also consider an adjustable base, which lets you lift the head and/or foot of the mattress to elevate certain parts of your body and tailor the support to your activities and preferences. Heres a closer look at the pros and cons of adjustable bases.
