The countys above-average rates of obesity, substance abuse and smoking make the population more susceptible to sleep disorders, Meoli said, although county-level data is scarce. Between 25 and 30 percent of adults in Cowlitz County report sleeping less than seven hours a night, according to a 2016 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Typically, your sleep apnea and insomnia rates are going to go up exponentially in a lower socioeconomic group, Meoli said.
Sleep apnea the most common condition patients are treated for at the sleep center is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a persons breathing is interrupted during sleep. There are two types: one, where a persons airway is blocked and another, where the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. About 22 million Americans suffer from the disorder, while about 80 percent of moderate and severe cases go undiagnosed, according to the CDC.
A University of Wisconsin study found that over an 18-year period, people with severe, untreated sleep apnea died a rate more than three times that of those without apnea. The disorder is also a factor in many vehicle collisions and accidents with heavy machinery.
Its kind of like a glorified expensive air compressor, Meoli said.
Dr. Amy Meolihead of PeaceHealth St. Johns sleep center, has been studying sleep science for 20 years.
What’s It Like To Participate In A Sleep Study
You arrive at the Sleep Center in the evening for an overnight sleep study. Small sensors are attached to your body that send signals about heart rates and rhythm, brain waves, muscle, eye, abdominal and chest movements, oxygen saturation and breathing from the nose and mouth. Then you sleep.
Through the night readings are recorded by a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist , who monitors your movements and behaviors during sleep.
You are awakened and released early the next morning so you are able to meet your work or daytime commitments.

Despite The Relationship Of Good Sleep To Good Health Many People Dont Even Know They Suffer From Sleep Deprivation
VANCOUVER Sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, memory loss, depression, premature aging, impaired thinking skills, and fizzling sex drive. Despite the relationship of good sleep to good health, many people dont even know they suffer from this treatable condition. It is estimated that one in five Americans suffer from a sleep disorder or sleep issue, and the majority of those go undiagnosed.
Amy Meoli, MD, board certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, will offer a free presentation titled End Your Sleepless Nights on Tue. June 11 at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. Dr. Meoli will share facts and information about the importance of a good nights sleep, and how to achieve it. Following her presentation Dr. Meoli will answer audience questions. For those unable to attend in person, Dr. Meolis presentation will be broadcast live on.
This is an important health issue, said Dr. Meoli. People who sleep poorly increase their risk of a number of poor health outcomes. Sleepiness affects learning abilities, alertness, mood, hand-eye coordination, short-term memory, and has been identified as the cause of a growing number of on-the-job accidents, automobile crashes and transportation tragedies.
Dr. Meolis talk will begin at 6 p.m. in PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Centers Health Education Center Auditorium, located at 400 NE Mother Joseph Place in Vancouver, WA.

Help For Getting A Good Night’s Rest
One out of three Americans has a sleep disorder that makes sleeping or waking hours miserable. Common sleep problems include:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder
- Sleep Terrors
If you have trouble sleeping, your primary-care provider may refer you to a sleep medicine specialist or you can make an appointment directly.
Sleep medicine specialists are medical physicians who have completed their education in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry or Pulmonology and have received extensive training in sleep-related issues.
Part of diagnosing issues include sleep studies, which are done in sleep labs. With the help of high-tech monitoring equipment and a sleep technician who watches and records your sleep patterns, your sleep medicine specialist can determine the kind of therapies that might help.

Diagnostic Evaluation: What Happens During A Typical Recording Period
Most patients, whether hospitalized or outpatient, are recorded during their normal bedtime, in a comfortable, private, home-like bedroom. This simulates an average sleep period as closely as possible. Upon arrival at the laboratory, they are greeted by the polysomnographic technician, who answers their questions about the test, gives them a brief, pre-sleep questionnaire to complete, and applies the recording electrodes.
During the night, the technician monitors the patient from an adjacent control room. This attention to detail ensures proper operation of monitoring equipment, quality control, attention to patient comfort, and rapid intervention in the event of medical emergencies.
Up to 20 different types of information are recorded during sleep testing, which includes continuous monitoring of eye movement and muscle and brain wave activity, as well as limb movements, respiratory rate, airflow, breathing effort, oxygen saturation, heart rate and rhythm. Other specific physiological parameters may be recorded, if requested.
Treatment And Management Of Sleep Disorders
The Sleep Disorders staff reviews each case in detail to arrive at an optimal plan for further evaluation and/or management of the patient. The correct treatment can be undertaken only after the real medical condition has been accurately diagnosed.
The primary care physician will receive a full account of the patients diagnosis and the recommended plan of management. Generally, the Sleep Disorders Center manages the long-term care of the patients sleep disorder.

Peacehealth Plans Expanded Sleep Center Services
- Zack Hale
Dr. Amy Meoli remembers driving the wrong way of one-way streets in medical school. Back then, there were no limits on how many hours medical students could work, and she was constantly sleep-deprived.
A few years later, when I was actually caught up in a normal sleep pattern, I realized oh yeah I was really impaired, said the new medical director of PeaceHealth St. Johns sleep center.
Meoli, who started at PeaceHealth in May, comes to Longview from Penn State Universitys Sleep Research and Treatment Center. Shes been studying sleep medicine since 1997, when she was selected for one of 14 sleep medicine fellowships available in the country at the time.
Meoli is now presiding over an expansion of PeaceHealths sleep center services. PeaceHealth has the only accredited sleep center in Cowlitz County, where disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia are common. The center is expanding its services to pediatric patients in September and is developing a chronic insomnia program that focuses on non-medication treatments. Its also expanding its home testing program to people living in more remote areas of the county.
