Taking Klonopin While Pregnant And Breastfeeding
It is not usually recommended to take Klonopin for anxiety and sleep if pregnant. Several studies done on animal subjects noted the occurrence of congenital conditions, such as cleft palate and open eyelid. Reduced maternal weight gain also has been reported.
There is simply not enough information to conclude whether Klonopin is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition to the risk of congenital conditions noted above, your newborn may experience withdrawal symptoms.
If you become pregnant while taking Klonopin, you should speak to your doctor or an expert at Minded. However, do not stop taking Klonopin without medical guidance, especially if you have been taking it for weeks or longer.
Similarly, Klonopin for anxiety and sleep is not recommended for women who decide to breastfeed. If you are breastfeeding, or want to breastfeed, be sure to consult your doctor or one of our Minded experts regarding the best course of action you might take, as well as to explain the possible side effects of continuing your Klonopin treatment.
Different Forms And Dosages
Clonazepam is a tablet, which you swallow. It also comes in an orally disintegrating tablet that dissolves in the mouth. It is taken one to three times per day, as prescribed by a doctor.
Xanax is prescribed as immediate-release and extended-release tablets to be swallowed. Its generic form can be given as an oral solution. Immediate-release tablets are taken several times per day. The oral solution is also an immediate-release form of the drug to be taken several times per day. The extended-release pill is only taken once per day.
Most doctors start the medication off with the lowest possible dosage and increase it in small amounts if needed.
Both medications start working within hours or days of the first dose. Clonazepam lasts about two to three times longer than Xanax, which lasts for a few hours.
Clonazepam is prescribed to treat panic disorder and is used to stop seizures. It is sometimes used in combination with other medications. This drug works by increasing the activity levels of gamma- aminobutyric acid , a chemical that sends signals through the central nervous system. When GABA levels are low, your body will be in an excited state, which could cause panic attacks or seizures. If you take clonazepam, the GABA levels in your body will increase, causing a calm feeling. It can prevent panic attacks and seizures.
Both drugs are central nervous system depressants.

Benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine receptor agonists are widely used to treat anxiety and insomnia, even though antidepressants are first-line therapy for anxiety disorders based on the evidence.1 In this issue of American Family Physician, Drs. Ramar and Olson review the management of insomnia and other sleep disorders.2 When benzodiazepines are used to treat insomnia, the effect wears off after a few weeks,3 and rebound insomnia has been reported with cessation of the drugs. Although patients report enhanced sleep with long-term use, there is no objective evidence to support this. Despite the lack of evidence of effectiveness, alprazolam , zolpidem, clonazepam , and lorazepam were the number 1, 2, 6, and 7 most prescribed psychotropics in the United States in 2009, respectively. Approximately 150 million prescriptions for benzodiazepine agonists were issued that year.4
In addition to abuse and dependence, other major risks associated with benzodiazepine use include the following:
Motor vehicle crashes. The risk of driving while on benzodiazepines is about the same as the risk of driving with a blood alcohol level between 0.050% and 0.079% .9

Z class drugs work as benzodiazepine receptor agonists. This means they work on the brain chemistry in much the same way as their benzo counterparts.
To be fair, Z class drugs are considered a better option for addressing insomnia. Their side effects are less severe and theyre not thought to be as habit forming. But this doesnt mean they can be taken every night for long periods of time.
