Do I Have To Pay Anything
The Sleep Number air mattress warranty is prorated. Only during the first year does Sleep Number cover the complete cost to repair or replace your mattress. After this, youre responsible for some of the cost.
So, how much are you responsible for after year one? There are separate costs for things like parts, shipping, inspection, and installation. For parts or products, the percentage youre responsible for slowly increases with time.
Heres a summary of what youll need to pay for the parts or products if your warranty claim is approved:
- Day 1day before 1st anniversary: No cost to you.
- 1st anniversaryday before 11th anniversary: You pay 30% plus 5% for each full year of ownership.
- 11th anniversary to 15th anniversary: You pay 85%.
When it comes to the cost of shipping, installation, and inspection, Sleep Number covers this at 100% during the first year. After that, youre responsible for the entire cost of shipping parts or products, mattress inspection, and installation.

How Can You Clean A Sleep Number Mattress
A quality mattress is a key to enjoying your sleep and being productive throughout the day. Unfortunately, failure to clean your mattress can lead to accumulated dust mites, dead skin, and dirt that can affect your life and reduce the lifespan of your bed. However, one of the main concerns is how you can clean a sleep number mattress.
You can clean a sleep number mattress by removing all the beddings from the mattress, unzipping the top part of the mattress cover, and spot cleaning with a mild detergent solution and warm water. You can also use a soft-bristled brush to clean the cover and lay the mattress cover to air dry.
Note that there are precautions you need to take to avoid shrinking the mattress or its cover. Read on to learn more about cleaning a sleep number mattress and the process in detail.

How Do You Clean A Mattress Topper
Most mattress toppers are not machine washable. This includes latex and memory foam since they’re hard to dry. In most cases, you will spot clean messes with a mild detergent and damp towel. Then, let it dry completely before covering it.
Consult the topper’s user manual or tags or the manufacturer’s website for the most accurate directions.
Whether you have a mattress topper or not, we strongly recommend using a mattress protector on your bed. The best ones are waterproof and machine-washable and cost as little as $20. Check out our guide to the best mattress protectors for more info.
Assess The Extent Of The Damage
You need to assess the situation to determine what you are dealing with. Is it fresh urine or the stain has been there for days? Check to see if there is a pungent or mild smell and little or a lot of urine to clean. Knowing what youre dealing with will help you determine the right cleanup method.
Sleep number mattresses have a thick foam, which means they can absorb urine faster. Sometimes you may need to repeat the cleaning process a few times to get rid of the smell and stains.
If you have fresh urine on the mattress, the cleanup process will be more straightforward. All you need is to remove the bedding and use a paper towel or rag to blot out any excess moisture. Avoid rubbing the rag in as this pushes the urine more in-depth into the mattress. Ensure you have the windows open for air circulation.

Can Mattress Pads Adjust The Firmness Of My Bed
Most mattress pads make only limited changes to the firmness of a bed, but some pads, especially thicker ones composed of soft materials like down feathers, can make a bed feel plusher. In most cases, people who want to dramatically change the feel of their bed are better off with a mattress topper than a mattress pad.
Should You Buy A New Mattress Or A Mattress Topper
Generally, a mattress should last you 8 to 10 years. If you’ve had an uncomfortable bed for less than that, a mattress topper can help reintroduce comfort to your sleep. If your bed is older than 10 years, it’s time to look for a replacement.
Sure signs you need a new mattress are when it starts to sag and provide less support. First, check your mattress’s warranty. Most warranties cover your bed for at least 10 years, and some last for a lifetime. If your mattress is still covered under warranty, you may be able to get a replacement or repair for free or for a nominal fee.
If your mattress has reached the end of its life and you can’t afford to replace it yet, a mattress topper is a good stopgap that can help you squeeze an extra year or two out of your mattress while you scrape together the funds for a replacement.
Sometimes, our bodies or sleeping styles change, and this can cause our mattress to become less comfortable. A change in your preferences isn’t covered by warranty, and you probably don’t want to throw out a perfectly good mattress that still has plenty of years left in it. In this situation, a topper can help.
Lastly, mattress toppers can help couples with different sleep preferences. “If you want to sleep together though, you might put a topper under the fitted sheet on one side of the bed for somebody who prefers a plusher experience,” Robbins said.

Overall Pros And Cons
On the upside, a great mattress pad can offer some damage protection to your mattress without restricting airflow and making the bed uncomfortably hot. Materials, depending on the loft, may give your mattress a slight upgrade in plushness, which may be all that stands in the way between you and the perfect amount of pressure relief.
That said, they will not improve the firmness or support in a bed that is wearing out and cannot significantly alter the feel of your mattress. Furthermore, they cannot offer waterproof protection against more severe spills and stains. Mattress pads that are ill-fitting can have a tendency to come loose or bunch up underneath you, causing discomfort.
Mattress pads are a good happy medium between the other types of mattress covers because they deliver the best of both worlds. A lot depends on what specifically youre looking to do to your sleep space and what kind of bedding you require for your personal comfort.
Sleep Number Smart Bed Series
The sleep number has a three-bed series that contains seven models. They also have a limited edition series meant to determine the consumers needs and comfort levels. The bed series include:
The company has classic models that include the C2 and C4. The C2 mattress is constructed with a polyfoam comfort layer over a support core and two adjustable air chambers. Releasing or adding air from the section allows you to adjust the firmness or softness of the mattress.
It comes with a 2-inch layer of gel-infused polyfoam with a material that easily conforms and adapts to the body. The dual-chamber design on the C2 mattress allows for different preferences. Youll find the cover is made from a blend of polypropylene and rayon to give the fabric a breathable feel.
C4 is another part of the classic series, and one of the expensive models in the range. Although the C4 has a similar design to the C2, its polyfoam comfort layer is an inch thicker to provide more firmness, ranging from a medium to a firm mattress. The C4 cover is made from a blend of polypropylene and polyester, but it has a similar C2 cover.
The performance models are the P5 and P6. They provide a balance between softness and firmness, which produces a plush and comfortable feel. The P6 has extra cooling material.
The innovative models surround cooling comforts and deep foam. This series has the i7, i8, and i10 models.

Why Should I Buy A Mattress Topper
The most common reason people buy a mattress topper is to make their bed more comfortable. It’s also great to use in an RV as a pad under your sleeping bag when camping or, in a pinch, it can serve as a guest bed.
Rebecca Robbins, PhD, associate scientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, recommends a topper when you want to extend the life of your mattress by a year or two or if you got a second-hand mattress that doesn’t match your sleep style.
Randall Laurich, DC, a chiropractor in South Florida, agreed. “I would say the main benefit of a topper is if a mattress is too firm, a mattress topper will make it softer and more contouring to the spine,” he said.
However, Laurich said some mattress toppers could be too soft and unsupportive. “Not having enough firmness can cause the spine to reduce its curvature,” Laurich said. “So a softer, thicker topper can sometimes have adverse effects, while a smaller, thinner topper could have more positive benefits overall.”
Our Review Of The Parachute Down Mattress Pad
Pros: Excellent heat dissipation, comfortable and supportive, made in the US, attaches to your mattress like a fitted sheet, machine washable, best motion isolation
Cons: Warranty void if tag removed, the deep pockets cause the skirt to hang down on thinner beds, not a good solution for people with down allergies
The Parachute Down Mattress Pad did well in every category we tested. The only category in which it was just “good” was the surface temperature immediately after getting up. Yet two minutes after getting up, it registered cooler temps than before I laid down. It was one of only two toppers to dissipate heat this well.
Parachute recommends machine washing your Down Mattress Pad before you sleep on it. Once it’s ready, the topper goes on your mattress like a fitted sheet and has deep pockets to fit mattresses up to 18 inches thick. I liked that it stayed in place well and didn’t shift. However, the deep pockets cause the skirt to hang down the sides of thinner mattresses, creating an unattractive appearance.
The topper is made of European white down in the US and features a sateen cotton shell. The down of the topper kept me cool while offering plush comfort. I fell asleep quickly each night and woke up feeling refreshed. I preferred to sleep on my side, but it wasn’t overly soft, so I felt good on my back and stomach as well.
The Parachute Down Mattress Pad is also a smart choice for couples because it performed the best in our motion transfer tests.

A New Topper For A Sleep Number Bed14 Sep 2015 1: 40#2
||Thanks for your detailed replay, Phoenix. Sources for the microcoils seem to be quite limited and I haven’t seen one that has an actually return policy. Lots more options for latex. In the mean time, I am experimenting with layers we already own. I unzipped the top cover of the mattress and removed the polyfoam egg crate that covered the air bladders. I added a 3″ memory foam pad that we already owned . That got zipped inside. Then I covered the mattress in a temperature regulating pad from IKEA that is not plush at all, almost more like a mat but it’s definitely cool. On top of that I’ve got the puffy quilted new mattress pad. That arrangement worked well last night. The memory foam is far enough under other layers as to not be hot and we can still feel the changes in firmness in the air bladders through the foam. The puffy pad gives me the pillowy feel I like without feeling like a sinkhole. We’ll see if this works. I assume all these comfort layers will eventually wear out but they are easily replaced and not too expensive. I was surprised at how well the sleep number components had held up, there is no reason to replace them as long as the pump doesn’t die or the bladders don’t leak. I personally really like the option of changing the firmness of my mattress at will so I like the sleep number. But it’s all very individual, isn’t it?Thanks again!|

Our Review Of The Tempur
Pros: Made of supportive and pressure-relieving memory foam, good heat dissipation, removable and machine-washable cover, 10-year warranty, easy to set up
Cons: No trial period, shifted significantly in the night, hard to put the cover back on after washing it
While testing the Tempur-Pedic Topper Supreme Mattress Topper, I got back into running and weightlifting after an injury sidelined me. Both of these activities aggravate my chronic lower back pain. I went to bed with my body exhausted and awoke feeling refreshed and ready to run and lift again, and I think the Tempur-Topper Supreme had a lot to do with it.
I’ve long appreciated the supportive feel of Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam. It slowly adjusts to the contours of your body and keeps your spine aligned no matter what position you’re sleeping in.
The pad features a cover primarily made of polyester that zips off so you can throw it in the washing machine. Removing the cover and washing it was easy, but putting it back on was a different story. It took me about 10 minutes to slide the cover on the floppy pad. I recommend just putting a mattress protector over it to save the hassle.
Setting up the Tempur-Topper Supreme was intuitive, and there was minimal initial odor, which completely dissipated by bedtime. The topper also did a good job of staying cool, and when I got up from it, the heat dissipated quickly.
What Type Of Damage Is Covered
Mattress warranties cover defects in workmanship or materials, not normal wear and tear. This begs the question, what is considered a covered defect versus wear and tear?
Every mattress company has different guidelines as to what they consider a defect. To know whats covered, you must get into a warrantys fine print. Fortunately, weve done that for you!
Heres whats covered under the Sleep Number warranty.
- Firmness Control System: Every part of the mattress involved in firmness control is covered by the warranty. This includes the air pump, air chambers, and hose. Additionally, the hardware that supports Responsive Air technology is covered.
- SleepIQ Hardware and Software: While much of the SleepIQ system coverage is outlined in the SleepIQ User Agreement, the hardware and software that facilitate this Smart Bed technology is covered under the warranty.

Our Review Of The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper
Pros: Made in the US with organic materials and natural latex, comfortable and supportive, great motion isolation, one-year risk-free trial period, 10-year warranty
Cons: Sleeps hot, shifts a bit, expensive
I’m a big fan of natural latex as a sustainable, responsive material. The soft rubber-like foam offers cushioning around the hips and shoulders while supporting your lower back and neck. You don’t sink in like with memory foam instead, there’s more bounce.
The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress Topper is great because it’s made of high-quality materials, including GOLS organic certified latex rubber foam. The topper as a whole is Made Safe and Greenguard Gold certified and handmade in California.
The quality translates to a hefty price , but Avocado also offers a one-year risk-free trial period and 10-year warranty both are the best of any of the toppers we tested.
The Avocado Organic Latex was one of the most supportive and pressure-relieving toppers I slept on. Whether on my stomach, side, or back, I felt great, and I woke up feeling refreshed in the morning. I tested the plush topper, which was slightly softer than average, but it’s also available in firm.
I was able to set up the topper in under five minutes. While there was an initial odor, by bedtime, it dissipated.
Which Type Of Mattress Pad Should I Choose
Mattress pads come in a number of types of materials, although the range of construction is narrower than in mattress toppers. Each way of designing a mattress pad brings potential benefits and downsides.
Cotton is one of the most popular choices for mattress pads. Its performance is impressive, providing softness and moisture-wicking with virtually no noise. Most cotton is durable and can be safely machine-washed and dried. Some types of cotton mattress pads are available at a low cost, but many, including higher-end and organic cotton mattress pads, are more expensive.
Polyester is another of the most common materials used in mattress pads. Polyester can be thin and soft, like in athletic clothing, or brushed microfiber, which has a plush feel. Polyester can wick moisture, although it is not as breathable as cotton. Polyester mattress pads are often the least expensive and easy to launder, but their reduced durability is a drawback.
Down feathers are found in many bedding products, including mattress pads. Downs light and soft feel makes this material especially popular in thicker mattress pads meant to provide a plush sleeping surface. The negatives to down are its high price point, its potential for causing allergies in some people, and its reduced loft and performance if it gets wet.
