Connections To The Shining Novel And Film

Doctor Sleep is based on the 2013 horror novel of the same name by Stephen King. The 1977 novel The Shining was adapted into a 1980 horror film of the same name by director Stanley Kubrick. King was critical of Kubrick’s film adaptation to the point of writing and executive-producing a new adaptation with the 1997 television miniseries.

While the film Doctor Sleep is intended to be a direct adaptation of the 2013 sequel novel, director Mike Flanagan said Doctor Sleep still “acknowledge Kubrick’s The Shining in some way”. Flanagan said, “It is an adaptation of the novel Doctor Sleep, which is Stephen King’s sequel to his novel, The Shining. But this also exists very much in the same cinematic universe that Kubrick established in his adaptation of The Shining.” He explained working with all the sources, “Reconciling those three, at times very different, sources has been kind of the most challenging and thrilling part of this creatively for us.” He first read the novel, and then had a conversation with King to work out adapting all the sources. As part of the process, Flanagan recreated scenes from The Shining to use in flashbacks. Same as The Shining, Flanagan also avoided the horror film trope of jump scares.

Once The Latest Horror Movie Doctor Sleep Leaves Theaters Where Can You Stream It At Home Heres What Weve Dug Up

Doctor Sleep has been creeping out audiences in theaters for over a week! If you havent seen the movie on the big screen, youre missing out! Though it wasnt welcomed with stellar reviews by critics, the movie still has a very respectable 77% at Rotten Tomatoes. From fans, Doctor Sleep has an even greater score, 89%. Needless to say, if youre a fan of the genre, youll likely enjoy the latest horror.

Its important to note, that despite its great reviews and feedback, Doctor Sleep didnt do as well as expected at the box office. The film only collected $14.1 million domestically during its opening weekend, settling for the No. 2 spot, behind Midway. This past weekend was only its second one in theaters and dropped to No. 6 with a weekend total of $6.1 million.

Doctor Sleep may only have a worldwide total of $53.8 million, which falls under what was expected, but dont judge the movie by its total. This one will be an underrated film for sure! Still, if youd rather wait to stream the movie from home, were not here to judge! As movie fans, we understand wanting to watch a movie from the comfort of your own home .

Doctor Sleep Is Now Streaming And The Internet Is Finally Falling In Love With It

Theres no way around it: when Doctor Sleep hit theaters last fall, it didnt do particularly great at the box office. Whether fans just werent feeling a long Stephen King movie or they didnt realize it was a sequel to The Shining, it failed to drum up any serious interest. The good news is that it may be transforming into a bit of a, um, sleeper hit, though. Now that Doctor Sleep has become available on streaming platforms, fans are finding it — and falling in love with its amazing story.

Doctor Sleep follows an adult Danny Torrance as he battles his own demons and ghosts. He eventually connects with Abra Stone , a young girl with psychic powers of her own and, together, they face a new battle between good and evil that forces Danny to confront his own childhood trauma.

Its a slow burn of a horror story, one that was rightfully critically acclaimed when it was first released last November, despite its lackluster box office performance. Now that its hit HBO Max, it looks like film fans are finally checking it out, much to the delight of some Twitter cinephiles whove been waiting for people to stop sleeping on it:

Some fans took the time to call out their favorite elements of Doctor Sleep, including Rebecca Fergusons ridiculously amazing portrayal of main villain Rose the Hat:

Struggling with alcoholism, Dan Torrance remains traumatized by the events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. His hope for a peaceful existence soon becomes shattered when he meets Abra, a teen who shares his extrasensory gift of the shine. Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.

Critics consensus: Doctor Sleep forsakes the elemental terror of its predecessor for a more contemplative sequel that balances poignant themes against spine-tingling chills.

    Metacritic: 59/100

The scores will change as time passes. Meanwhile, Ill post some short reviews.

It doesnt have Jack Nicholson, Stanley Kubrick or even much of the Overlook Hotel, but Rebecca Ferguson and other good actors provide some shine of their own in Doctor Sleep, a drawn-out and seldom pulse-quickening follow-up to The Shining that still has enough going on to forestall any audience slumber.

    Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The best filmic tribute to The Shining already exists in the form of Rodney Aschers documentary Room 237, a collection of conspiracy theories and fan worship that shows how viewers have been remaking this material with their own imaginations for years. The Shining didnt need Doctor Sleep, but it does provide a reminder of why King and Kubrick remain among the most appealing mainstream storytellers of their generations. Any attempt to resurrect their work is bound to look meek by comparison, but its a welcome reminder of everything that made The Shining both versions so worthwhile in the first place.

Doctor Sleep Is Now Streaming And The Internet Loves It

Despite hailing from one of the horror genres most consistent filmmakers coming off the back of Netflixs smash hit The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagans Doctor Sleep didnt find much of an audience when it hit theaters last year. While the Stephen King adaptation scored solid reviews, it disappointed at the box office after bringing in a little over $70 million on a $45 million budget, resulting in a loss for the studio and forcing any plans for a potential sequel to be abandoned.

Doctor Sleep came burdened with a lot of pressure as a direct continuation of the story told in The Shining, which is regarded as one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and while Flanagan managed to do a solid job in adapting the source material, there just wasnt much interest from either fans of Stanley Kubricks classic, Stephen Kings work or the genre in general.

A running time of 152 minutes and very deliberate pace that took the story a long time to get moving likely turned a lot of people off the idea of sitting through Doctor Sleep, especially when it was announced that the movie would arrive on home video with a Directors Cut that added an extra 28 minutes of footage.

However, Flanagans slow-burning supernatural tale is now available to stream on HBO Max and looks to be in the midst of a reappraisal after proving to be one of the recently-launched services most popular new titles. In fact, you can check out just some of the reactions below.
