Sleep In A Cooler And Darker Environment
According to a small study published in the journal Diabetes, people who keep their bedrooms at a steady temperature of 66 degrees for one month increased the amount of calorie burning brown fat in their bodies by up to 42% and boosted their metabolism by 10%. A room that is too warm can also prevent you from falling or staying asleep. Bogan recommended setting your thermostat to 65 degrees.
To lose weight during sleep, try getting rid of that night light, too. Research suggests that light before bedtime can suppress melatonin and sleeping with a light on appears to affect the circadian regulation of metabolism, increasing the risk of weight gain, according to the Sleep Foundation. So, turn off your TV, phone and any bedside lights, and consider investing in blackout curtains to block light from outside.
Less Sleep = Less Energy
Sleepless nights cause you to feel sluggish and irritated all throughout the daythats a no brainer. Whatre more is that because the hormones that regulate growth and appetite are also part of the equation, they are also equally susceptible to harm when it comes to sleep sabotage. Both leptin and ghrelin are made predominantly during sleep, which means that people have less of a sense of satiety when not getting enough sleep. The more you are awake, the greater the chances then that an extra snack or two will be factored into the daily mix.
What is all coming down to is that people who dont get enough sleep are more likely to be hungry because the body needs more energy to stay awake. Unfortunately, sleepy eaters tend to consume more than enough to compensate, which leads to weight gain.
Sleep Quality And Duration
Though many of the most effective weight loss strategies focus on diet and exercise alone, early research suggests that the quality and quantity of your sleep may also play a big role in your bodys ability to regulate its weight.
Several population based studies have found an association between chronic sleep deprivation and higher body mass index , which is an indicator of your weight in relation to your height .
One study in adults aged 6799 found that those who slept 5 or fewer hours per night were, on average, 3 times more likely to develop obesity, compared with those who got 78 hours of sleep per night (
Thus, it may be worth prioritizing adequate sleep as part of your weight loss plan.

Burning Calories Even At Rest
The brain, heart, lungs and all other vital systems working need energy in order to properly function, meaning that the body continues to burn calories even while asleep. A Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR, is the term used to define the number of calories required to maintain internal physiological functions while sleeping. Another common term often used synonymously a.k.a. resting metabolic rate, or RMR, which additionally measures energy used at rest during any time of the day.
Typically, people burn 0.4 to 0.5 calorie for every pound of body weight for every hour of sleep so 8 hours of sleep burns around 500 calories for an average 150-pound individual. The number of calories lost may be significantly more or less, depending on how much you weigh and how long you sleep.

Can I Lose Weight By Sleeping More
When it comes to keeping our weight under control we naturally focus on diet and exercise, but intriguing research suggests that if we want to keep those calories in check we should also be looking at how much we sleep.
To test this theory for ourselves, we brought four volunteers to a location in the Kent countryside for two nights. Each volunteer experienced one night of undisturbed sleep and one night during which their sleep was severely disrupted by a baby doll programmed to cry through the night. We told our volunteers that we were investigating how sleep affects our mental abilities, when actually we were monitoring what they ate to see if the amount of sleep they were getting made any difference to their food choices.
We kept track of our volunteers food intake with carefully positioned cameras and our footage was analysed by nutritionists led by Dr Denise Robertson from the University of Surrey.
Three out of our four volunteers slept badly when they were taking care of the pretend babies. The next day, two of the volunteers ate more breakfast and chose less healthy options than they did when they got a good nights sleep. The third volunteer who slept badly didnt eat more, but did choose more sugary foods.
Our final volunteer got a good nights sleep on both nights, despite the presence of the pretend baby, and chose to eat similar foods on both days.

More research is needed to prove the same effect happens in people, however. Lack of sleep is associated with weight gain due to changes in hunger hormones and metabolism. The room temperature is the crucial factor that affects how fast, comfortable, and deep we fall asleep. According to sleep.org, the ideal room temperature should be between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. Sleep For Weight Loss
While you won’t get much leaner after one night’s rest, adopting healthy sleep habits may help you reach your weight-loss goals in the long run. “Scientific American” reports that the prevalence of both obesity and lack of sleep have risen in the United States over the past few decades. Although that fact alone does not confirm a causal link, researchers have found that the longer people sleep, the higher their levels of leptin, a hormone that triggers feelings of fullness, and the lower their levels of ghrelin, a hormone that triggers hunger. For healthy hormone levels, aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night.

Lose Weight By Sleeping More
Sleeping in wont make you fat. In fact, a new study shows that more hours in the sack could help you slim down by reducing how much control your genes have on your weight.
The study, published in the journal Sleep, looked at the sleep patterns and body mass indexes of more than 1,000 twins. On average, the people in the study slept 7.2 hours a night, which falls within the National Sleep Foundations recommended 7-9 hours. People who slept less than seven hours a night, however, had a higher BMI than those who slept more than nine hours. Genetics also had a greater influence on the BMI of the short sleepers, with 70% of their bodyweight controlled by genes, compared to 32% for the long sleepers.
Bodyweight is shaped by many factorsboth genetic and environmentalthat combine to determine how much you weigh. Previous studies have shown that genes can influence weight by controlling many of your bodys functions, such as glucose metabolism, energy use, storage of fatty acids, and feeling full. By affecting those genes, sleep can also alter weight.

Does Sleep Affect Weight Loss: Does Sleeping Naked Help You Lose Weight
Whether you love to slip into your favourite PJs or something a little less restrictive, research has shown that sleeping naked does have many benefits, when it comes to weight loss. You may want to snuggle up in different layers, especially in the winter, but studies have shown that the lower your body temperature is, while you sleep, the better it is for losing those pounds.
Studies have shown that our body temperature impacts not just our quality of sleep, but also how our metabolism reacts. Research by the US National Institutes of Health studied a group of men, in a cooler environment for over a month and found that it sped up their metabolism, and burnt brown fat, in a bid to make them warmer while they slept.
The job of the brown fat, which is also known as adipose tissue, is to help you stay warm when you get cold – it becomes activated when your body temperature is at a certain temperature and therefore is burnt more easily when youre cold.

The rumor: You can drop pounds by catching Zs
The not-so-secret way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more, right? Well, according to some, sleeping thats right, catching more Zs can help you shed pounds. So, should you swear off the gym in favor of more time snoozing under the sheets?
You might think that the more hours youre awake, the more calories youre burning, so you should be losing more weight. But youd be wrong.
In fact, people who dont sleep enough at night risk gaining extra pounds, not losing them, according to John M. Jakicic, director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
I think poor sleep is a contributing factor to weight gain, says Jakicic. When you have poor sleep or lack of sleep, youre setting a whole cascade of events in motion hormonally that could set you up for weight gain.

Optimize Fat Metabolism Overnight With Honey
The problem for a lot of us is, we cannot optimize body fat metabolism overnight when we go to bed with a depleted liver. We activate stress hormones which inhibit glucose metabolism, which in turn inhibits fat metabolism. The incredible news is, metabolism stress can be easily prevented by eating honey prior to bedtime as it provides adequate fuel for the liver during the night fast. Honey intelligently restocks the liver selectively without digestive burden and forms a stable supply of liver glycogen which our brain demands for the 8 hrs of night fast when we sleep.
Keeping ourselves healthy and slim cant get any sweeter than this.
Role Of Sleep Duration And Quality On Weight Loss
If youre trying to lose weight, the chances are that exercise and diet are the areas that have got your focus.
However, youd be surprised to learn that how long and well you sleep also influences your weight. A study found that people who slept for about five hours or less were more likely to become obese than those who got between seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
Hunger hormones such as leptin and ghrelin seem to be the link between sleep and weight loss. Sleep deprivation could throw these hormones out of balance which could affect your appetite and increase your cravings for sweet foods.
So, if youre trying to lose weight in the long run, you might want to include a good nights rest as part of your strategies.
Here are a few tips to improve your sleep experience if youre finding it difficult to go to bed at night:
- Turn off the lights. That includes your phones and computers as blue light from these devices could affect your bodys melatonin production, which helps regulate your bodys sleep-wake cycle.
- Set a bedtime and stick to it. Developing a regular sleep schedule could help improve your sleep quality.
- Stay cool. You might find that youll sleep better when the temperatures are around 6670°F.
- Try relaxing. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, tea, and soothing music could help you fall asleep quicker and improve your sleep quality.
