Adult & Child Dental Insurance In The Marketplace
Under the health care law, dental insurance is treated differently for adults and children 18 and under.
- Dental coverage is an essential health benefit for children. This means if youre getting health coverage for someone 18 or younger, dental coverage must be available for your child either as part of a health plan or as a stand-alone plan. Note: While dental coverage for children must be available to you, you dont have to buy it.
- Dental coverage isnt an essential health benefit for adults. Insurers dont have to offer adult dental coverage.

Should I Even Bother Replacing My Teeth With Affordable Dentures
If you need some or all of your teeth out, it may cross your mind whether you should even replace them.
Lets talk about that.
Did you know that every wild animal on the planet cannot survive without teeth? But theres one exception.
Thats right. Humans are the only species that can adapt and actually survive without teeth. From squirrels all the way up to lions, if an animal loses all its teeth in the wild. Do you think it survives? Nope.
But just because humans have access to blenders, and forks & knives to cut up their food, that doesnt necessarily make it a good idea to not replace teeth.
Studies show that missing teeth increases the risk of stomach issues such as irritable bowel syndrome. And they even show that Edentulism can lead directly to impairment, functional limitation, physical, psychological, and social disability, and handicap.
But thats not all. Patients missing as little as even one tooth can be at higher risk for temporomandibular joint disorder . By not replacing a missing tooth, it opens the door to a domino effect. The teeth are able to shift in ways that change the way the jaw opens and closes. That change can create symptoms such as a headaches, muscle pain, neck pain, ear pain, and jaw soreness.
All that potentially from one tooth? It sounds crazy, but its what we now know.

What Is A Dental Implant
Dental implants are recognized as one of the best options for replacing missing or badly broken-down teeth, with over a 90% success rate over the past 30 years. Dental implants provide a long-term solution due to ongoing technological advancements and more durable implant materials. Composed of titanium metal, dental implants integrate with the jawbone and either secure a denture in place or are covered with a crown to create a strong and natural-looking smile.
How Does Sedation Dentistry Work
The process depends on the type of sedation your dentist chooses. If youre taking an oral sedative, for instance, your dentist will write you a prescription for the drug and give you instructions on how to take it. As long as you follow those instructions, youll benefit from reduced anxiety and increased relaxation. Once the medication begins to work, you should start to feel drowsy and content.
You dont have to prepare at all for nitrous oxide. Your dentist will supply it before, during, and right after the procedure. However, if you choose IV sedation, you might have to prepare in advance.
For instance, your dentist might ask you to fast not eat or drink anything for several hours before the dental work. You might also need to avoid taking certain medications the day before you visit the dentist because they can interfere with the sedation medication.

A Tale Of Two Dental Implants
As for the two treatment plans. I agree with the local dentist. What Aspen Dental is suggesting for you, wont work for long. There are some important dental bridge engineering principles being ignored by them which will cause this bridge to fail. A dental bridge is a false tooth which are suspended between two dental crowns on anchor teeth. You know that because of what you had to begin with. Their lack of adherence to sound principles is likely why you lost your canine teeth. In your new case, theyre suggesting suspending them between abutment teeth with mini implants.
Im going to ignore the fact that mini implants arent designed to support a tooth. Theyre mostly to help anchor a denture and youd need several of them. Even then, they still wouldnt last as long.
Instead, I want to focus on the engineering.
For illustrative purposes, lets suppose you needed to replace your first premolar, as seen on the left. It is the tooth in the center of the three teeth which have the blue line. The two adjacent teeth would be considered the abutment teeth which youd anchor your bridge onto. Notice that these three teeth lie in essentially a straight line. This is good because there wont be any twisting stress on the teeth.
Now, lets look at what Aspen is suggesting for you.
To prevent that, the second opinion dentist is suggesting you put an additional dental implant in the middle of the bridge. This will work and eliminate all twisting.

Aspen Dental Class Action Lawsuit
Aspen Dental Class Action Lawsuit
Aspen Dental, one of the nations largest corporate-dental chains, has been hit with a class action lawsuit accusing it of illegally owning and operating dental practices and of deceiving patients with aggressive sales pitches for expensive treatments after theyve been lured in with promises of free exams and X-rays. Aspen Dental owns and controls 358 clinics across the country and markets to low-income patients that cant afford dental care. The Aspen Dental class action lawsuit was filed following a June 2012 report by PBS FRONTLINE and the Center for Public Integrity titled Dollars and Dentists that uncovered Aspen Dentals practice of servicing patients who cant afford a dentist and then allegedly locking them into debt. Some patients in the report also alleged they were overcharged and given unnecessary treatments.
The Aspen Dental class action lawsuit was filed October 18, 2012 by 11 patients across the country who accuse the company of violating laws in 22 states that require clinics to be owned by dentists actively performing procedures onsite. The laws are designed to prevent business interests from overshadowing those of patients.
Aspen Dental said Friday that the accusations in the class action lawsuit are entirely without merit, and that it provides support services to dental offices owned by local dentists.
Plaintiffs in the Aspen Dental Class Action Lawsuit are represented by attorneys Brian Cohen and Jeffrey Norton.
Why Im Writing About Affordable Dentures
If youve read my other articles, you know Im a reconstructive and sedation dentist. I see some of the most complex cases in the country. And although thats great for some patients, what Ive come to understand is that every patient has different goals.
For some patients, theyre suffering. Theyre in pain. And many of their teeth are bothering them. Their priority is now.
Many of these patients are simply done with their teeth. They may not want to invest in a complex reconstruction to set back the clock of their teeth to prior function.
For these patients theyre seeking health but are also prioritizing affordability as well. What do I often recommend for patients that are seeking to replace an entire arch of teeth?
Usually, a denture is the most affordable treatment.
And although my practice is skilled at denture services, there are other practices that may provide more simple, efficient, and affordable dentures throughout the country, and some patients may not have the means to fly to my practice in Boston.
Enter why I often recommend Aspen Dental or Affordable Dentures as a recommendation to patients seeking affordable dentures.
Lets talk about why.

What You Need May Not Be What You Think
Many people often believe their teeth are much worse than they are. And after reading 3500 word article about dentures, it can make you believe thats your only option.
But dentures are not your only option.
And what about if your teeth are saveable? You may be thinking that your teeth need to be extracted when they may be saved.
If you go in for a consult at Aspen Dental, Affordable Dentures, or any other practice they will review all your potential options. Maybe a denture is the best option for you, and maybe it isnt. Either way, these practices will be able to provide comprehensive dental treatment options including all types of general dentistry treatment. Whatever you need and whichever option works best for you should be available.
Does Dental Insurance Coverage Include Sedation Dentistry
Some do, most dont. Most insurance providers consider using nitrous oxide as elective, nice to have but not necessary in order to complete most dental procedures. That being said, there are a small handful of plans whose coverage does include nitrous oxide, therefore we recommend that you contact your insurance provider or ask us to check for you before scheduling to know for sure. Dont let fear of cost prevent you from completing necessary treatment A large majority of people have some type of dental care coverage. The percent of coverage and annual maximum will vary plan to plan. And because there is not a single plan that covers 100% of preventive, restorative, and elective dental procedures, most often there will be a portion of your dental services that will be your responsibility to pay for. For many, cost is the #1 reason people give for why they do not complete necessary dental treatment. A comprehensive new-patient exam visit will clarify your needs and associated costs Before worrying about how much dental treatment will cost and how youll afford it, we strongly recommend for you to schedule a comprehensive exam so you can know for sure. Many patients are surprised to find out that their mouth is in better shape than they thought. Plus, starting with an exam is a great way to meet and get to know our team before scheduling any treatment.

What Is General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is the only true sleep dentistry option. Under general anesthesia, patients remain completely unconscious throughout the treatment process. This ensures total comfort and relaxation, during even the most advanced oral surgery. For your safety, your vitals will be closely monitored throughout treatment, and if you are at increased risk for complications, we may recommend having the procedure performed in a hospital setting.
