Sleep Number Bed: What Do The Numbers Mean

HSN | Sleep Number Mattresses / Bedroom Essentials 04.20.2019 – 03 AM

Katie Golde disclosure page

Select Comfort, the makers of Sleep Number, had adjustable and customized comfort in mind when they created Sleep Number beds. One of the main benefits of a Sleep Number bed is that people can sleep on a mattress that fits their precise level or cushion and support. This can still be the case even if that level changes frequently or if people sleep with a partner whose idea of comfort differs from theirs.

The Sleep Number 360 p5 is part of the company’s Performance Series and is comfortable, supportive, and adjustable. Click the button for $500 off!

Inside The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed

The best part about the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed is its customizability. That starts with the various configurations available for the bed itself. I tested the $3,800 king FlexTop P6 mattress, the $2,100 FlexFit 1 traditional base and two $850 DualTemp mattress pads. All together, that comes to $7,600.

Since we’re comparing the 360 bed to queen-size competitors from Beautyrest, Eight and Winkbed, I priced out the queen version of the bed I tested — it comes to $5,500.

Whether it’s a king or a queen bed, the 360 Smart Bed by Sleep Number, with optional accessories like the FlexFit 1 base and the DualTemp pads, is expensive. See how it stacks up against other connected beds in the chart below.

What We Think About Sleep Number Mattresses

In general, we think you can get a more comfortable mattress for a lot less. But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.

Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. However, these features are available only with the companys adjustable bases , which cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen.

Heres how the mattresses themselves compare to one another:

What To Consider When Buying An Adjustable Bed Frame

A wide range of these beds are available, ranging from bare-bones designs to high-tech models loaded with extra features. Before purchasing an adjustable bed, you should consider a handful of factors. These include range of adjustability, weight limit, price-point, warranty coverage, and whether or not your current mattress is compatible with this type of base.

Ratings And Reviews Common Praise

Sleep Number Special Edition w/ADAT SK Adjustable Mattress Set QVC.com
  • Couples love being able to personalize the firmness of their side of the bed. The dual air chambers available on most models means that someone who prefers a firmer bed doesnt have to compromise with a partner who likes more cushion. If one person likes to sleep on their side and another doesnt, they have a great solution here.
  • People with back problems or medical issues that require them to sit up at different points love the flexibility of Sleep Number beds. They can adjust the firmness of their bed for a couple of nights if needed and can raise/lower the head of their bed with a FlexFit Adjustable Base depending on their current needs.
  • There was heavy praise for the longevity and durability of the Sleep Number bed.People came back to Sleep Numbers site to say theyve had their bed for 10+ years and they are still comfortable. Of course, not everyone was able to stay comfortable in their bed for a decade without experiencing issues, but people tended to have their Sleep Number bed for a long time.

Sleep Number Series/model Breakdown

Sleep Number offers two types of beds:

  • 360® Smart Beds
  • Value Beds

The 360® Smart Beds are organized into three categories: Classic, Performance, and Innovation.

Each series essentially builds off the other. The Classic Series beds, the C2, and C4 offer the most standard options while the Innovation Series has the largest, thickest layers and most added features.

Classic Series:

The Classic series models are the most basic mattresses. They will have the firmest feel to them because there is the least amount of layers between the air chamber and the top of the mattress.

C-2
72 x 84 split only at the head of the bed

The Split and FlexTop mattresses are best paired with a FlexFit Adjustable Base. For example, with a Split King, the sleeper can raise/lower just the head and feet of his or her side of the bed. If the persons partner is snoring, he or she could raise the head of just their side with a FlexTop.

Trial Period And Returns

Sleep Number gives you 100 nights to test drive their beds. There are a lot of moving parts built into a Sleep Number bed. We would recommend you take 30 nights of sleeping before deciding whether to keep any mattress. We would recommend taking at least that amount of time for the Sleep Number. You may need some time to figure out which number/firmness at which you sleep most comfortably.

If you decide the mattress, or any of the individual layers, doesnt work for you, just initiate a return within 100 days. Sleep Number has to authorize it before you can expect a return. Once you initiate a return, you have 30 days to get it back to Sleep Number. You will pay to return your mattress. After all of that, and after your returns have arrived at Sleep Number, youll have to wait 21 days for your refund.

But you can exchange your mattress for an upgrade or downgrade. Youll have to pay the difference for the upgrade. Youll get a refund of some portion of the difference if you choose a lower-priced model.

Sleep Number Mattresses Pros And Cons

Sleep Number QSeries Limited Edition Modular or Adjustable Mattress Set on QVC

In a sense, Sleep Number mattresses are just like any other: The top section is the comfort layer, while the bottom section provides support.

But instead of using layers of supportive foam or an innerspring system, the bottom portion of a Sleep Number mattress features an adjustable air chamber. It can be inflated or deflated to your preferred level of firmness.

Unfortunately, Sleep Number doesnt disclose what the comfort layer is made of. Reviewers describe it as cushiony but not necessarily plush. Some Sleep Number mattresses have thicker comfort layers.

Sleep Number Customer Reviews

Because Sleep Number mattresses can only be purchased through their stores and website, the company has a lot of control over published reviews. Thats worth keeping in mind when you browse the thousands of positive reviews on their website.

On Trustpilot, a third-party review site, Sleep Number has an average rating of 1.6 out of 5 stars based on over 35 reviews. The company hasnt claimed their profile on this website, and reviewers dont clarify which mattress they own.

Many of the 1-star reviews on Trustpilot relate to poor sleep and negative customer service experiences, while the 5-star reviews praise the comfort and quality of Sleep Number mattresses.

Sleep Number Flexfit 2 Base Vs Leggett & Platt Prodigy 20

Many shoppers who start off on the search for an adjustable mattress dont realize that what they might actually prefer is an adjustable base, which allows you to elevate your head and feet and create endless positions that cater to in-bed activities, like reading and watching TV.

Adjustable bases may also improve sleep issues like snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep Number offers three adjustable bases that work with nearly any of its airbeds, and the FlexFit 2 is the middle-of-the-road price option. It comes in nine sizes, including split King, is backed by a 25-year warranty, and has under-bed lighting and other luxury features.

The Leggett & Platt Prodigy 2.0 is an alternative to the Sleep Number base, with a similar price point, great reviews on Amazon, three size options, including split King, and a 10-year warranty.

Sleep Number Mattress Pricing

Sleep Number mattresses fall into the luxury mattress category. Website pricing for queen mattresses is $899 to $4,299, depending on the model. These prices dont include optional upgrades, like regular or adjustable bases.

Sleep Number mattresses are generally comparable to other luxury mattresses. A queen-size Sleep Number 360 pSE Smart Bed with an adjustable base, under-bed lighting, and a foot-warming feature is $5,198 before tax and shipping. Thats about the same price as a Tempur-Pedic mattress with similar options and upgrades.

Sleep Number Innovation Series I8 Vs Tempur

Sleep Number i10 Legacy FlexTop King Adjustable Mattress Set

The i8 is one of three mattresses in Sleep Numbers Innovation line, which has above-average pricing and is the most luxurious of the three Sleep Number lines. While the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR ProAdapt doesnt have adjustable air chambers, it comes in three firmness settings: soft, medium, and firm.

Qualities the mattresses share include a 12 height, deep pressure relief, and a high price point. The i8 and the TEMPUR ProAdapt can accommodate a wide range of sleepers, have high-quality construction, and have great durability ratings.

Most Common Pieces Of Praise

  • Reviewers love that it is adjustable on the fly. People can change the firmness easily with the remote. People can also adjust the angle of the top and bottom if they purchase the FlexFit Adjustable Base.
  • The C2 model requires no mattress rotation at all because it does not have a layer of foam inside the mattress like the other models.
  • Not sure if this is praise exactly, but many reviewers added a mattress topper of their choosing to this mattress and loved the results.
  • Couples loved that they could customize their half of the bed to whatever firmness they desired. Especially for couples who has one partner who likes firm beds and another who likes softer, this seems to be a big selling point.

Top Adjustable Bed Frames

Our testers come from a variety of weight groups and sleeper types so that we can accurately gauge who will prefer each adjustable bed. Our choices are based on a combination of in-depth research and product testing. We also examine each models value, features, and warranty information. Below our top picks, youll find the buyers guide which highlights the pros and cons of adjustable beds and explains more about how they work, what they offer sleepers, and how to find the best one for you.

Its important to note that not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds. Mattresses with firmer feels or dense coil systems may not offer enough flexibility for owners to truly take advantage of their adjustable beds customization. Additionally, most of these bases are not compatible with twin size mattresses. The best mattresses for adjustable beds include memory foam, latex, and hybrids with softer feels and more flexible designs.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series

Sleep Number QSeries 6.1 Adjustable or Modular Bed with ADAT on QVC

The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.

Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.

I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.

The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.

Sleep Number Classic Series C2 Vs Personal Comfort A2 Bed

Both the Sleep Number Classic Series c2 and Personal Comfort A2 mattresses are airbeds. Like Sleep Number, Personal Comfort exclusively produces airbeds with customizable firmness levels to suit your weight and sleep position, but Personal Comforts prices tend to be lower. The A2 is part of Personal Comforts Classic Series, which is the most affordable of the brands five airbed lines.

The A2 is 9 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 1 comfort layer. The c2 by Sleep Number is 8 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 2 gel-infused comfort layer. Overall, the beds are very similar in construction, but the Sleep Number c2 devotes a bit more material to the comfort layer and is, surprisingly, more affordable than the Personal Comfort A2.

Owner Review Feedback For Sleep Number Mattresses

Sleep Number mattresses are typically purchased directly from Sleep Number, so thats where we found the majority of the online reviews. Out of the 34 good-quality negative user reviews we collected about the Classic Series , 10 contained complaints about issues related to a lack of cushioning. This included reviewers describing the mattress as too firm, too thin, bottoming out, or having poor pressure relief. Several reviewers pointed out that the c series is especially problematic for heavier-weight sleepers, and others noted the support felt better once they added a mattress topper.

For negative feedback on the Performance Series, we found far fewer complaints related specifically to the mattress thinness . But four out of 26 good-quality negative Innovation Series reviews noted that the mattresses were too firm or offered poor pressure relief. Perhaps this is to be expected, given that these users paid much more for their mattresses and therefore expected more. Three out of the six Cooling Memory Foam owners complained that their mattresses were either too thin, too firm, or lacked pressure relief.
