The Sleep Number Value Beds
The Value Bed line is Sleep Numbers bed in a box option. The company is planning to discontinue it in the near future, but for now, given the current coronavirus crisis, it has gained in popularity because of its contact-free delivery. The Value lines s1 and the s3 mattresses cost about the same as the beds in the Classic line, but they have a quilted cushion layer . That quilted layer is zoned to cater to various pressure points there are five different cushioned areas in the s1 and seven in the s3. The company doesnt divulge details about its foam, so were not sure how the zones differ. But we do know that this comfort portion isnt thicker than the 2 inches we found wanting in the Classic lines entry-level c2, and the air pump sits on the floor, as opposed to being integrated into the mattress itself, like with the other lines. And although the Value line comes with SleepIQ technology, the Value Beds dont have the smart feature that allows them to conform to your body as you shift positions. We havent tried this line, but given how spartan the c line felt, we cant imagine that any amount of quilting or zoning would compensate for the thin comfort layer.
What Devices Or Apps Can A Sleep Number Bed Connect With
The SleepIQ app can connect and share health information with a Fitbit or the MapMyFitness app about workouts and fitness activities. People can also connect to Apple Health to share sleep start and end times.
SleepIQ cannot connect with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or the Nest Learning Thermostat.
What Is A Sleep Number
A Sleep Number is a setting on how soft or firm you want your bed to be. The numbers usually range between 1-100, with firmer mattresses in the higher spectrum. Being adjustable and customizable, you can choose the settings through a button or by syncing the app on your phone and adjusting it from there. This customization is possible thanks to the air chambers connected to a hose that you can pump to increase or decrease the air within them to your preferred firmness. The air chambers typically have a weight limit of 400 pounds each. Depending on its size, a bed can either have one or two air chambers.
Based on surveys, most users prefer Sleep Numbers within the 35-45 range, which provides enough firmness for ample support and pressure relief.

Sleep Number Smart Bed Series
Sleep Number prides itself in constantly evolving to provide for their customers what they need. Currently there are three series of bed designs, all which boast SleepIQ technologies and have varying heights made for different levels of overall support, pressure relief, and advanced cooling capabilities.
The cost of a Sleep Number is in direct relation to their bed series, as each offers a slightly different feel in relation to the initial bed comfort prior to personalized adjustments. This requires varying amounts of material use, as well as what technologies are being offered in relation to cooling capabilities and foam depth.

What Is Sleep Numbers Trial And Return Policy
Sleep Number offers a 100-night trial, but customers must pay for return shipping.
While Sleep Number isnt a strictly online company, its trial and return policies are similar to many other mattress e-tailers. It offers a 100-night trial for mattresses, in keeping with companies like Purple, Leesa, and Tuft & Needle.
Sleep Number states it can take about 30 days for customers bodies to adjust to the new mattressand makes it sound as though most people find their ideal setting within that period. If, however, after sleeping on your new mattress for a full 30 nights, you are not completely satisfied, contact us before the end of the 100 night In-Home Trial Period to arrange for the return of your Sleep Number bed or layer, the policy states.
Returns must be received within 30 days of initiating the process, and be in sanitary condition. Unfortunately, Sleep Number wont cover the cost of return shipping, so youll be saddled with a fee ranging from $149 to $249 plus tax. This covers the cost of techs packing up the mattress, according to a customer service rep. The mattresses are recycled, though the rep couldnt clarify exactly how, other than saying they arent turned into new mattresses.

Addressing Sleep Number Mattress Complaints
Were talking about a mattress that features a pocket of air. Sure, its a more advanced approach to the sort of thing you take on a camping trip and inflate with a compressor. While the mattresses are thoughtfully appointed, you may still run into some of the same problems with a mattress that costs over $1000 that you would with the $40 one. Here are some of the most common Sleep Number complaints that you should consider before purchasing.
Sleep Number Bed Sinks In The Middle
You might also notice slight valleys or sagging in the center for mattresses that come with two air chambers. To resolve this, check if the foam comfort layer where you usually lie on is less supported, softer, or thinner than the rest of the pad. To do this, you will need to open the mattress from the top cover panel then place the foam between your hands to inspect its current condition. If you notice that the foam has lost its support, you can contact your local Sleep Number store to request a replacement. In other instances, fluff the foam comfort layer by holding the top cover panel and shake it to even out the distribution. Make sure that you do this step on all four sides, and zip the cover back.
Use a Wireless Air Bed Pump compatible with your Sleep Number mattress to adjust its air chambers. This pump comes with a wireless remote that has custom setting options to help you find your exact comfort level.

What We Think About Sleep Number Mattresses
In general, we think you can get a more comfortable mattress for a lot less. But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.
Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. However, these features are available only with the companys adjustable bases , which cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen.
Heres how the mattresses themselves compare to one another:
Sleep Number Series/model Breakdown
Sleep Number offers two types of beds:
- 360® Smart Beds
- Value Beds
The 360® Smart Beds are organized into three categories: Classic, Performance, and Innovation.
Each series essentially builds off the other. The Classic Series beds, the C2, and C4 offer the most standard options while the Innovation Series has the largest, thickest layers and most added features.
The Classic series models are the most basic mattresses. They will have the firmest feel to them because there is the least amount of layers between the air chamber and the top of the mattress.
|72 x 84||split only at the head of the bed|
The Split and FlexTop mattresses are best paired with a FlexFit Adjustable Base. For example, with a Split King, the sleeper can raise/lower just the head and feet of his or her side of the bed. If the persons partner is snoring, he or she could raise the head of just their side with a FlexTop.

How Does A Sleep Number Bed Work
The basic principles at work with a sleep number bed are air mattresses. Each bed comes with air chambers, one or two depending on the size of the mattress.
The ability to adjust the firmness comes from air being pumped into or released from the mattress, allowing it to inflate or deflate based on the users preferences. This is the sleep number setting.
But its not just your average air mattress. The air chambers work in tandem with comfort foam, which is either PlushFit foam, enhanced foam, or memory foam, depending on the model.
Most models are equipped with at least one layer of comfort foam that sits between the air chamber and the mattress topper.
The foam comes in a variety of different thicknesses, from 1.5 inches to 4 inches, depending on the model. Foam density varies by model as well.
The last piece of the puzzle is the mattress top. They too vary by model. Pillowtop mattresses are available in the Performance Series models and the tops get more luxurious from there, with the duvet topper being the creme de la creme.
All mattress tops have a separate zipper that allows you to access the air chambers and memory foam easily for cleaning and making any necessary adjustments.

Can A Heavy Person Use A Sleep Number Bed
With a weight limit of 400 pounds per air chamber, a Sleep Number bed can comfortably accommodate people 230 pounds and above. According to a study conducted on users of Sleep Number beds, people with heavier weight tend to find models i8, i9 and i10 to satisfy their needs. In terms of comfort, the preferred firmness for people in the heavier weight range is right around Sleep Numbers 70-80. Your firmness preference might also change if you have recently gained around ten pounds or more. To make your mattress more comfortable, try adjusting your Sleep Number settings to increments of five points until you can achieve your preferred firmness.
Tuft & Needle Adjustable Frame
Instead of placing an adjustable base on existing sleep furniture, the Tuft and Needle Adjustable Frame might be a winner for anyone looking for a sleek, minimalist frame design. This flexible frame is designed with steel and wood components that are thin and modern in appearance. The frame comes with hassle-free assembly, customizable height, zero-gravity, and anti-snore functionality.
However, if youre looking for a more luxurious experience, this model will leave you wanting. It doesnt come with lighting or massage features.
The Tuft and Needle Base is available in Queen, King, California King, and Split King sizes. Like Nectar, The Tuft and Needle Frame is one for value seekers at $995. It also comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. However, the electrical components are covered by a significantly shorter three-year warranty.

Which Sleep Number Bed Is Best
Now to the real meat of it! Here is a breakdown of every Sleep Number bed so you can figure out what is best for you.
For Firm Loves, Without Bells and Whistles
The C Classic series mattresses will be the most affordable option, but also the most limiting. These beds will be on the firmest end of the spectrum and come with the least amount of bells and whistles. Still, this could be a great option if youre on a budget but still want the ability to adjust the level of air pressure in your mattress with the click of a button.
The Sleep Number c2 Bed:
The c2 bed does not come with a foam mattress pad on top of the air chamber. Instead, it has a soft fiberfill sewn into a thin layer right above the air chambers. This is a great option for people who love firm beds especially side sleepers. Many reviewers said the bed did a great job at helping alleviate back pain by providing ample and firm support. Others spoke to the beds longevity and a few were happy with the price point being more manageable than comparable beds.
Lastly, the c2 includes a 15-Year Limited Warranty, which means any damage to the bed due to a manufacturing or material issue will be covered by Sleep Number for the first two years. After that, a percentage of the cost will be replaced or refunded up to 15 years based on the type of damage reported.
