Sleep Number currently shows two models in its Memory Foam Series of adjustable airbeds, the 12″ high m7 and the 10″ m6. For some reason the 13″ m9 is no longer shown. The 13″ mLE, a limited edition model, only appears when it is a featured sale item.

Like all Select Comfort beds, the Sleep Number m6 features adjustable air support. Memory Foam Series beds have one or two air chambers, depending on the bed size and the options. Twin size beds have only a single chamber. Full and Queen have the option of single or air support. King sizes all have dual chambers.

The pressure in the air chambers of the m6 is controlled by a wireless hand-held remote. It shows a number on its screen, the Sleep Number for the comfort level of the air in the mattress. There are only three buttons on the remote, Up, Down and a button with an O on it. Sleep Number says that the “remote remembers you and your ideal support, and guides you to your SleepNumber® setting.”

Select Comfort now has SleepIQ as an option for the m6. This system monitors the user’s sleep, measuring breathing, heart rate and movements and calculates a SleepIQ number. Night-after-night, an average number emerges. The user can find out which Sleep Number settings produce the best sleep and comfort. According to Select Comfort, “There’s nothing to wear, nothing to turn on. All you have to do is sleep.”

Sleep Number 360 P5 Smart Mattress

The Sleep Number 360 p5 is an air bed with one or two adjustable air chambers and a 4″ comfort layer on top. It’s an upgraded version of the Sleep Number Classic mattress series, and it has an extra layer of foam meant to enhance pressure relief.

The p5 and pSE models have the same 4-inch comfort layer and features, except the pSE comfort layer is made of a foam that will retain less heat. The pSE and the p6 each have all of the same features, including the cooler comfort layer, but the pSE has a 4-inch comfort layer vs. a 5-inch comfort layer in the p6.

The m7 is the only Sleep Number bed that offers the hugging sensation of memory foam. If you and your sleep partner prefer a light memory-foam cradling, and if you cant agree on a firmness level, then the m7 may be a worthwhile, albeit expensive, option. However, the company doesnt divulge what, exactly, is in that foamy comfort portion, so we dont know how dense, and therefore durable, it is. The sinky-ness of the m7 is comparable to that of most online foam mattresses . It has a slight sinking sensation, but not the more-assertive curve-conforming feel of something like the Tempur-Adapt.

You Might Want To Consider This Mattress If:

The Sleep Number 360 m7 is the only Sleep Number model to feature a memory foam layer. The m7 memory foam comfort layer is 5″ thick and offers both the contouring and pressure-relieving qualities that most sleepers expect to feel with memory foam.

Sleep Number And Memory Foam

Sleep Number added the benefits of memory foam to the adjustable support of an airbed in their Memory Foam Series mattresses. These models were the m7, with 3 inches of gel-infused memory foam over the dual air chamber system, followed by the m9 with 5 inches of memory foam. Memory foam is also in the x12, with two layers, and the original i10.

Memory Foam and Air Support

With the m7, m9, original i10 and x12, air in the support system replaced the high-density firm foam found in traditional memory foam mattresses. According to memory foam experts, the mattress does feel like a very firm memory foam mattress when it is on the firmest setting, and has the feeling of a softer mattress when the air level is reduced. However, reducing the air pressure also allows the air to be displaced by the heavier mid-section of the body and transferred to the lighter legs and shoulder areas, thereby creating a hammock effect, which negates the benefit of the memory foam.

The Six-Chamber Solution

The solution for those who want an adjustable memory foam mattress, but want to avoid the loss of low back and hip support is to go with a tri-zone air system . In this system, the single chamber on each side is partitioned into three chambers. This prevents air from being displacing from mid-section to the head and foot of the mattress.

Among brands with six-chamber adjustable airbeds are Air-Pedic and Boyd Sleep. It was also in TEMPUR-Pedics now discontinued TEMPUR-Choice Collection.
