Sleep Number Adds Smart Furniture More Health Tracking To Its New Smart Bed

Sleep Number x12 smart bed tracks your rest

Sleep Numbers upcoming smart beds could potentially save your life. Its something you wouldnt expect a mattress to do, but Sleep Number has been perfecting its mattresses for years now to show us how sleep tracking is done right. For CES 2022, the company announced its new 360 smart bed offers even more automation to not only adapt to your preferences, but also a new piece of smart furniture that offers modular attachment to complement its beds.

The companys new 360 smart beds will feature multi-sensor technology for proactive health care by tracking unusual health events it detects while youre sleeping. Its adjustable bed frame will now be able to tilt in even more directions than before. Youve seen how snorers can be put to ease in some of those commercials by tilting the front of the bed, but now the entire bed frame will have the ability to tilt to a slope to provide better blood breathing and blood flow circulation. On top of that, it can rise or lower as well helping those with mobility issues to get in and out of bed easier.

Sleep Number wants to protect you through all of lifes changes with its new lineup. Its all still in the early stages, but the smart furniture wont become available until 2023 with pricing to follow. However, its new 360 smart bed will start at $1,099 and become available some time this year.

Modular & Adjustable Bases

Not included in the price of your Sleep Number mattress but available for purchase are modular bases and a series of adjustable bases.

While you dont have to use Sleep Numbers modular base for your mattress, it does replace a traditional box spring and is available for $299 for a Queen.

There are three levels of FlexFit adjustable bases that will essentially enhance your Sleep Number experience.

  • FlexFit 1:Raises the head of your bed
  • FlexFit 2: Raises the head and foot of your bed, has a zero gravity option, offers a timer and reduced snoring feature
  • FlexFit 3: All of the features in the FlexFit2 plus a massager as well as under-bed and nightstand lighting

What We Think About Sleep Number Mattresses

In general, we think you can get a more comfortable mattress for a lot less. But if you insist on Sleep Numbers adjustability because you and your partner cant compromise on a firmness level, and you have a flexible budget, we think only the Performance Series and Innovation Series mattresses and the Cooling Memory Foam mattress are worth considering. The less expensive Classic Series mattresses and the Value Bed lines are just too thin for most people. If you like a plush mattress with good support, then you should spend more for the Innovation Series beds, which have thicker cushioning.

Beyond SleepIQ, Sleep Numbers marketing also touts technology that claims to help you fall asleep faster with a foot-warming feature. You can also theoretically control your partners snoring by raising the upper portion of their side of the bed. However, these features are available only with the companys adjustable bases , which cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen.

Addressing Sleep Number Mattress Complaints

Were talking about a mattress that features a pocket of air. Sure, its a more advanced approach to the sort of thing you take on a camping trip and inflate with a compressor. While the mattresses are thoughtfully appointed, you may still run into some of the same problems with a mattress that costs over $1000 that you would with the $40 one. Here are some of the most common Sleep Number complaints that you should consider before purchasing.

Popular Mattresses By Sleep Number:

Sleep Number

Our discussion will revolve around the factors that are affecting the final cost of the mattress. To check these differences in factors we need to touch each line thoroughly that will enable us to examine the parameters in proper direction.

We will notice every single detail of each line properly. The differences in final cost depend upon the factors like temperature, foam type, plush feel and other electronic features. So lets start with the first range

Classic:

This line is the most affordable one. It gives the least prices quoted by sleep number you may also call it your gate pass to be the part of the sleep number system. It further offers three more types of mattresses the c2, c4, and CSE.

These are the variants of each other with a slight difference like the thickness of ply at the top of dual air system.C4 the medium range mattress has 10 inches of thickness that includes 1.5 inches memory foam sheets and three adjustable zones of an air bladder that control firmness. It also has sleep tracker by default.

These features make this line look very classic and that is why its named after that. As for the price, the classic line ranges from $599 to $2199.

Smart Bed Support Levels

Like with any mattress, the most essential criterion for a smart bed is whether it delivers the support you need for spinal alignment, says Bert Jacobson, head of the School of Kinesiology, Applied Health and Recreation at Oklahoma State University, who researches the impact of sleep surfaces on slumber quality.

Your body type can determine what level of fitness is necessary for a good night’s sleep. Heavier people tend to require firmer mattresses to support their bodys pressure zones, for example. One size does not fit all. For the best support, a bed should conform to your weight and form, with different amounts of density where the body is heavier or lighter, says Jacobson. A Consumer Reports survey found people with neck and back pain reported better sleep on adjustable air beds such as Sleep Number mattresses, where firmness could be precisely tweaked.

Choosing An Ideal Sleep Number Alternative

We suggest the Air-Pedic as the best Sleep Number Bed alternative vs Sleep Number Bed.

Our readers in search of a mattress similar to the Sleep Number variant should look at two significant points comfort and customizability. One thing Sleep Number is known for is the companys hyper-responsive and comfortable air technology. As sleepers relax into the Sleep Number, the companys Responsive Air® technology intelligently ensures everyone on the bed is comfortable. The Sleep Number Mattresss dual air tech also ensures the sleep experience is sustained through the evening for all sleepers, including stomach sleepers and side sleepers. The Air Pedic 800 bed also allows for this customization.

On top of comfort, advanced features such as the companys SleepIQ® technology routinely track sleepers movements and quality of sleep, so theres little left to the imagination when it comes to figuring out how well youve slept. Back sleepers will also love that SleepIQ ensures plenty of firmness thats akin to a firm innerspring mattress.

All of that said the Air Pedic is a great competitor to the Sleep Number Mattress for savvy shoppers, and although in some cases thats true, there are a few brands that come quite close. Well take a look at the best Sleep Number Bed alternatives below.

Wear Your Fitbit On Your Wrist

Some Fitbit models, like the Inspire 2 and the original Inspire, allow you to wear your Fitbit in a clip.

Unfortunately, when you wear your Fitbit in a clip and set your Inspire to on-clip mode, the heart rate sensors automatically turn off.

That means that your Fitbit in the clip-position can only record sleep in the three general categories of awake, restless, and asleep since it doesnt record any heart rate data.

So for folks who wear their Fitbits in a clip or pendant when sleeping, try wearing it on your wrist and see if that makes a difference.

When you wear your Fitbit on your wrist and set it to wrist mode, it automatically detects when you sleep and records your sleep stages using your heart rate information.

Thats why you must check that your Fitbit is set to on-wrist and not on-clip mode in the Fitbit Settings app.

What Is A Smart Bed

Smart mattresses are any bed equipped with technology that tracks sleep or sensors that improve your sleep experience. Some potential smart bed capabilities include

  • Automatic firmness adjustments: Air beds have come a long way. Rather than simply choosing your select comfort level and leaving it at that, smart air pumps monitor and adjust mattress firmness to encourage uninterrupted sleep.
  • Sleep tracking
  • Climate control
  • Connection to smart devices

Adjustable bases are smart bed frames. Most adjustable bases allow you to raise the head or foot of the bed. You can pair adjustable bed frames with smart mattresses or most traditional mattresses. If youre interested in smart bases, check out our top picks for the best adjustable beds.

Dont Tell The Fitbit App You Are Going To Bed

All wrist-based Fitbits automatically sense when you are sleeping when wearing your Fitbit to bed. So there is no need to tell the Fitbit app you are going to bed or starting sleep.

To get a detailed reading of the sleep stages, do not select Begin Sleep Now inside the Fitbit app when you go to bed.

Also, dont tap on Im Awake when you get up.

For whatever reason, when you tap these notices in the Fitbit app, your Fitbit does not reliably track your sleep stages. Why? We dont know!

However, taping these app features still tracks your sleep in time awake, restless, and asleep.

We recommend that you allow your Fitbit to automatically track your sleepthat seems to be the best way to get all your sleep data, including sleep stages.

Plus, you dont have to do anythingso its one less thing to do before sleep.

Sleep Number Classic Series C2 Vs Personal Comfort A2 Bed

Both the Sleep Number Classic Series c2 and Personal Comfort A2 mattresses are airbeds. Like Sleep Number, Personal Comfort exclusively produces airbeds with customizable firmness levels to suit your weight and sleep position, but Personal Comforts prices tend to be lower. The A2 is part of Personal Comforts Classic Series, which is the most affordable of the brands five airbed lines.

The A2 is 9 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 1 comfort layer. The c2 by Sleep Number is 8 thick, is dual-sided, and has a 2 gel-infused comfort layer. Overall, the beds are very similar in construction, but the Sleep Number c2 devotes a bit more material to the comfort layer and is, surprisingly, more affordable than the Personal Comfort A2.

Sleep Number Remote Not Working

The firmness of a Sleep Number bed is controlled via a remote or SleepIQ app.

Have trouble with the remote? Don’t fret as troubleshooting isn’t challenging. Two AA batteries run the Sleep Number 360 smart bed remote. In addition to following the remote’s set-up process, users need to ensure their bed is not only plugged in but also all the connections are secure.

When a remote stops working, inflating or deflating the mattress isn’t possible. The remote can stop working mainly because of two reasons

· Kinked hose

· Loss of power connection

If the bed’s Firmness Control System is not running as you try to deflate or inflate, it means that the system isn’t getting enough power. If that’s the case, push the power cord into the wall and system’s base.

If it is because of a kinked or loose hose connection, check to ensure the hose isn’t lined at the bed’s base and mattress. A kinked hose connection is also common with theFLEXFIT 3 SMART BASE. If this is the case, check the connection of the hose at the pump.

Another issue that affects a remote is the display not working. If the display light is dimmed or not working, consider changing the batteries. When doing that, insert the batteries and battery cover properly.

Its More Than Just Zs

The privacy policies of many devices that track and transmit personal information allow for the sharing of data that has been stripped of personal identifiers.

But privacy experts have shown its not terribly difficult to use or combine such information to re-identify people.

You are left with the impression that, Dont worry, no one will be able to point to you, but they dont actually say that, says Lee Tien, senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. I dont know how they actually could say that.

Unlike personal data collected in a doctors office or a sleep clinic, the information gathered by sleep trackers is not protected by federal privacy rules.

Some sleep trackers or apps can connect with other smart devices in your home, such as a thermostat or coffee maker.

Nifty, for sure, because as you wake up, your heater can kick on and the coffee maker can start doing its thing. But it also can mean those devices are sharing your information. Sleep Number says its beds can import information from other devices but does not share customer information with them.

Still, the interconnectedness exposes more vulnerabilities.

We connect all these devices to each other, notes Kilic at Public Citizen. If hackers want to get into the system, can easily do so and collect all this info from you: How do you use your bed? How often do you have sex? This is very sensitive information.

A Smarter Night’s Sleep

Sit back and let Sleep Number handle your z’s

The Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed keeps your body cool thanks to its temperature-balancing sleep surface, while the FlexFit 3 base warms your feet with a built-in heater. Its excellent SleepIQ companion app allows for truly customizable comfort, letting you adjust the firmness and the position of the mattress to suit your preferences. It tracks your sleep health and biometrics, and offers useful tips to help improve your shut eye. Priced at $6,198 for the mattress and base configuration we tested, it will put a dent in your bank account, but a good night’s rest is crucial for health, and the Sleep Number i8 makes every night a dream, earning it our Editors’ Choice award.

If a Sleep Number is out of your budget, however, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro Mattress looks to be a promising alternative. It isn’t adjustable like a Sleep Number, but it tracks similar sleep and health metrics, supports dual-zone heating and cooling, and can vibrate to wake you up without disturbing your partner. We haven’t tested it yet, but an older Eght Sleep model scored well, and at half the price of the Sleep Number, it’s worth a look.
