Sleep Number 360 P5 Smart Mattress
The Sleep Number 360 p5 is an air bed with one or two adjustable air chambers and a 4″ comfort layer on top. It’s an upgraded version of the Sleep Number Classic mattress series, and it has an extra layer of foam meant to enhance pressure relief.
The p5 and pSE models have the same 4-inch comfort layer and features, except the pSE comfort layer is made of a foam that will retain less heat. The pSE and the p6 each have all of the same features, including the cooler comfort layer, but the pSE has a 4-inch comfort layer vs. a 5-inch comfort layer in the p6.
Construction And Materials Comparison
The construction of a mattress is of central importance to its feel, performance, and durability. The construction includes both the design of its layers and the actual materials used in those layers.
In general, a mattress can be understood as having two main sections:
- The comfort system is the top part and offers the most immediate effect on feel. It is normally made of polyfoam, memory foam, latex, wool, cotton, and/or polyester.
- The support core is the bottom part of the mattress. It affects the mattress feel and the performance of the comfort system. The support core also helps prevent against excessive sagging in the mattress. It can be made with polyfoam, latex, innerspring coils, or air chambers.
Both the comfort system and support core can be made up of one or more layers that can be the same or different materials. Quality components in each and every layer will help protect against a weak link that drags down the overall mattress performance.
The following sections give an overview of the construction and materials in the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number beds. While we know the basics about what goes into them, neither company discloses all the specifications of their mattresses, which can at times make it difficult to fully compare their models.

Save A Favorite Bed Position
Adjust the bed to your favorite position. Press the star button or hold down the button on top of your remote. The remote will prompt you to save the current position as your Favorite Setting.
Flat and Favorite will operate the bed differently if you have a FlexTop® or Split King bed.
- Favorite will operate both sides of the bed together, because the foot of the bed must adjust at the same time for this setting.
- Flat will return the foot to flat and the head of the selected side to flat. The other head will stay elevated until returned to flat on that side of the bed.
- You can save a different Favorite setting for each side of the bed.
- Favorite and Flat will adjust each side of the bed independently.
What Is A Sleep Number Setting
Your personal Sleep Number setting will help you feel supported, comfortable, and well-aligned when laying on your mattress. Your Sleep Number will change depending on how firm you like your mattress and is set by inflating or deflating the air chambers inside your mattress.
You can find your ideal Sleep Number setting by lying back and selecting the Find My Sleep Number feature on your SleepIQ app, which comes with every purchase. Your mattress will then become firmer as the air chambers inflate and, once it has reached maximum firmness, it will then start getting softer as the air chambers deflate.
When you feel at your most comfortable and supported, you press Stop and your Sleep Number setting will be saved to the app.
Sleep Number settings range from 0 100, with 100 being the firmest setting. Sleep Number reports that their most popular setting is in the 35 40 range, but this is completely dependent on your personal preferences and what position you prefer to sleep in.

You Dont Believe In The One Mattress For Everyone Philosophy
Amerisleep has a line of five mattresses catered to different types of sleepers. Their philosophy is they will have greater success if they match their line of mattresses with the individual sleeping preferences of consumers. This contrasts with the one mattress for everyone philosophy at other companies. If you believe having different options with different firmness levels is a good idea, then Amerisleep is a good company to look at.

In addition to Dual Air, Sleep IQ and Responsive Air technologies, the Innovation Series beds provide superior pressure relief and temperature balancing. The temperature balancing feature makes the mattress absorb your body heat when youre warm and releases heat when youre cold. How cool is that?

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series
The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.
Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.
I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.
The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.
Core Line 25 Year Limited Warranty
Sleep Number®s Core Line of mattresses: C2, C4, P5, P6, I7, I8, and I10 models and Sleep Number® modular bases purchased after May 1, 2017, are covered in the 25-year limited warranty.
It is highly recommended that potential customers and already existing customers read the full warranty policy on the website. There are some important insights and weve listed a couple here:
- Sleep Number will essentially cover the cost of a manufacturing or product defect in full for the first two years of the warranty.
- There are several things you can do to void your warranty. Some of these include staining/damaging your mattress with liquids or fluids, ripping off the legal tag, opening the remote and forgetting to keep your original receipt .
- After the first two years, you are responsible for a portion of the price needed for any repairs or replacements to your mattress or base.

Ratings And Reviews Common Praise
- Couples love being able to personalize the firmness of their side of the bed. The dual air chambers available on most models means that someone who prefers a firmer bed doesnt have to compromise with a partner who likes more cushion. If one person likes to sleep on their side and another doesnt, they have a great solution here.
- People with back problems or medical issues that require them to sit up at different points love the flexibility of Sleep Number beds. They can adjust the firmness of their bed for a couple of nights if needed and can raise/lower the head of their bed with a FlexFit Adjustable Base depending on their current needs.
- There was heavy praise for the longevity and durability of the Sleep Number bed.People came back to Sleep Numbers site to say theyve had their bed for 10+ years and they are still comfortable. Of course, not everyone was able to stay comfortable in their bed for a decade without experiencing issues, but people tended to have their Sleep Number bed for a long time.

Sleep Number Mattresses Pros And Cons
In a sense, Sleep Number mattresses are just like any other: The top section is the comfort layer, while the bottom section provides support.
But instead of using layers of supportive foam or an innerspring system, the bottom portion of a Sleep Number mattress features an adjustable air chamber. It can be inflated or deflated to your preferred level of firmness.
Unfortunately, Sleep Number doesnt disclose what the comfort layer is made of. Reviewers describe it as cushiony but not necessarily plush. Some Sleep Number mattresses have thicker comfort layers.
The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Classic Series
The under-$1,500 Classic Series is Sleep Numbers entry-level offering, and the mattresses in this line sure feel like it. The 8-inch c2 reminds me of a dormitory bednot surprising, since it contains only 2 inches of foam the rest of the mattress is made up of air encased in the bladder. The c4 has an inch more foam, for a total of 9 inches, and feels only slightly less institutional theres nothing cuddly about it. Unless youre used to sleeping on a mat or you plan on springing for a good mattress topper, we dont recommend this series.
In 2020, Sleep Number updated its 360 Smart Beds, adding temperature-balancing featuresincluding high air-flow fabrics and gel materialsmeant to make the mattresses feel cooler and more breathable.

Many customers, even ones saying the bed was good or great, complain about sales personnel, customer service.
Ease / Difficulty Of Use
Conventional mattresses are easy to use in that you simply lie on them and no adjustment is involved. By contrast, airbeds in general including Sleep Number involve a learning curve in that you must find which setting is right for you personally. At least 30% of owners say that significant time and effort was required to find their optimal setting or “sleep number.”
Due to Sleep Number’s auto-adjusting ability, the possible need to manually change adjustment when you change position seems less likely. Due to this auto-adjusting feature, Sleep Number seems to perform better than other airbeds on this issue.

Sleep Number C2 Summary
Overall, c2 is a great bed choice if you like really firm beds, which are typically great options for side or back sleepers. Plus if youre looking for something thats adjustable and affordable, this might be a good fitespecially if you sleep with a partner who has different sleeping preferences and will split the bill.
Delivery Warranty And Returns
The Value Bed line ships free via UPS. Other lines can be delivered in-person for $200. You can pick a day and time window based on availability, and, if all works well, Sleep Numbers Comfort Service Home Delivery service team stops by with your mattress, configures the air pumps and app, and shows you how everything works. However, the delivery team missed my window twice because of New York City traffic . I received my bed on the third try, only to find out that I had been given a one-chamber instead of a two-chamber mattress, as requested. For my re-order, with the help of the Sleep Number public relations team, I was able to confirm a morning delivery and received the correct mattress without a hitch. To be fair, despite my experience, customer service wasnt a big pain point among the user reviews we analyzed.
Theres a 100-night free trial for all new Sleep Number mattresses, but you need to sleep on one for 30 nights before filing for a return. Plus, if you decide to return the mattress, theres at least a $200 fee to cover transportation costs. If you ordered an adjustable base with your mattress, that base cannot be returned.
