Sleeping On Metrics: The App Bed Adjustment Experience
The Sleep Number app offers two primary features: reporting and control.
The control part is pretty easy. Set your sleep number, put up your head to your desired position , and adjust your feet . And if you have the option, turn on the LED under the bed. Those are your options.
Our Sleep Number 360 iLE smart bed connects via Bluetooth. My wife and I both have control. Occasionally, the bed loses connection to our devices and switches to a Wi-Fi connection, which is far inferior to the Bluetooth connection. With Wi-Fi, you must set the position and then click on a set button, but the bed usually doesnt pay attention to the position set in the app and just keeps going until you tell it to stop. The precision of Bluetooth is lost on the Wi-Fi configuration.
Which Sleep Number Bed Is Best
Now to the real meat of it! Here is a breakdown of every Sleep Number bed so you can figure out what is best for you.
For Firm Loves, Without Bells and Whistles
The C Classic series mattresses will be the most affordable option, but also the most limiting. These beds will be on the firmest end of the spectrum and come with the least amount of bells and whistles. Still, this could be a great option if youre on a budget but still want the ability to adjust the level of air pressure in your mattress with the click of a button.
The Sleep Number c2 Bed:
The c2 bed does not come with a foam mattress pad on top of the air chamber. Instead, it has a soft fiberfill sewn into a thin layer right above the air chambers. This is a great option for people who love firm beds especially side sleepers. Many reviewers said the bed did a great job at helping alleviate back pain by providing ample and firm support. Others spoke to the beds longevity and a few were happy with the price point being more manageable than comparable beds.
Lastly, the c2 includes a 15-Year Limited Warranty, which means any damage to the bed due to a manufacturing or material issue will be covered by Sleep Number for the first two years. After that, a percentage of the cost will be replaced or refunded up to 15 years based on the type of damage reported.

The iLE bed is at the top of the Innovation line for Sleep Number. It comes with multiple foam layers over the air support system. It is softer than other mattresses so may not be right if you are a stomach sleeper or of a heavy build. Most folks liked their iLE bed, but some had issues with the feel and durability.

Sleep Number 360 M7 Smart Bed
- Price: $$$
- Type: memory foam and adjustable air
- Height: 11 inches
The m7 Smart Bed blends cooling memory foam with a 5-inch comfort layer and smart adjustability. This may be a good, albeit more expensive, option if you like the hug of traditional memory foam, and youd also like to customize firmness.
Close to 3,500 reviews give this mattress a 4.7 rating out of 5 stars, and the vast majority are 5 stars. Still, negative reviewers mention uneven support and difficulty sleeping.
These mattresses cant be purchased at third-party mattress or furniture stores.
Height, comfort layer thickness, and cooling features are the biggest differences among the Sleep Number models. When choosing a mattress, think about how plush you like your mattress and if youre looking for upgrades.
Sleep Number offers a sleep quiz to help you narrow your options. Nine questions cover the following:
- who is using the mattress
- your preferred mattress size
- if you experience common sleep issues, like cold feet, trouble falling asleep, and snoring
- if you read or watch television in bed
Based on your answers, the company offers several mattress recommendations that might suit your needs.

Not The Most Durable Mattress
Another popular topic that many of the Sleep Number reviews mention is durability.
Lets get something straight – air mattresses arent really that well-known for their incredible durability. Ive had one, myself – while it was pretty good at the beginning, with time, the mattress started becoming more and more worn down.
That being said, it would seem that a lot of the Sleep Number bed reviews claim the c2 and c4 models to be even less-sturdy than other air mattresses in the industry! The most common form of complaints that youre likely to come across would be those that talk about the air chamber not being able to hold air properly – it would seem that this is an ongoing issue for the company.
Avoid Sleep Number If
- You need extra support. Sleep Number beds tend to support less weight than an innerspring mattress.
- You don’t want to rely on an app or technology for your bed. While Sleep Number has a solid reputation for quality, it’s possible for things to go wrong. Reports of remotes getting stuck on “error”, or air loss issues occasionally happen. If you want to keep things simple, look for a standard bed.

Modular & Adjustable Base Descriptions
This modular bed base is a standard base that is designed to be both sturdy and durable. Sleep Number says it will last 20 years or more and prevent sagging in the mattress. It is also easy to get through narrow spaces and set up in smaller rooms so it could be ideal for apartment living.
Raises the head of the bed one remote will control the elevation of the bed and adjust the Sleep Number in the same device.
The most popular FlexFit Base. It raises the head of the bed like the FlexFit 1 and offers the following additional features:
- A Zero Gravity option that raises the head and foot in a way that leaves the sleeper feeling weightless
- Partner Snore technology allows one partner to raise the other partners head
- Timer feature changes the raised part of the bed at a certain time in an effort to shift the sleeper into a different position at a designated time.
Includes all of the features in FlexFit 2 and the following features:
- Turn on a soft light under the bed and control the nightstand lamps with one button
- Massage soothes tired muscles and leaves the sleeper feeling rejuvenated
***From Sleep Number: The FlexFit adjustable base is not covered under our 100-Night In-Home Trial and is non-returnable. Delivery and set up outside the standard Comfort Service. When purchasing online, one must select the Home Delivery option. Standard UPS shipping is not available for adjustable bases.***
Level & Flat Sleep Surface
About 20% of Sleep Number bed owners report a problem with the middle of the bed where the two air chambers meet.
Some owners say there is a “valley” or “trench” in the middle, while others report a “hump.” There also can be a problem with one or both sides of the bed sloping toward the middle which can cause a sleeper to roll or slide in that direction.
The middle area may be uncomfortable to lie on, and it can be less than friendly for intimate activities, including cuddling, spooning and sex.
Sleep Number customer service may have solutions to problems with the middle, such as a “lift” which is a piece of foam that is placed under the air chambers to raise the middle.
Problems with the middle of the bed tend to be reported mainly by owners who use very different firmness settings for each side of the bed, such as 90-20. It may also be a problem when both sides use a very low or very high firmness setting.

Foam Vs Hybrid Mattress
The mattresses on the list above fall into two categories: hybrid and all foam. Both types have their own benefits.
Foam mattresses are made entirely of layers of foam, including memory foam mattress options, latex foam or gel foam. Typically each foam layer is a different density, with high-density foam on the bottom for support and a top layer of softer foam for comfort.
Hybrid mattresses use both foam and metal coils to provide support. They are closer in design to the innerspring mattress most of us grew up sleeping on, but with added foam for comfort and additional support.
Sleep Number 360 M7 Smart Mattress
The Sleep Number 360 m7 is the only Sleep Number model to feature a memory foam layer. The m7 memory foam comfort layer is 5″ thick and offers both the contouring and pressure-relieving qualities that most sleepers expect to feel with memory foam.
The only Sleep Number model exclusively featuring a memory foam layer is the Sleep Number 360 m7. The m7 memory foam comfort layer is 5 inches thick. You should feel both the contouring and pressure-relieving qualities that most expect to feel with memory foam. This layer also works to keep you cool since it absorbs heat and then releases it when you grow too cool.

Dipping In The Middle
Couples who share a Sleep Number mattress sometimes voice concern over a dip in the middle of the mattress. This complaint is common enough that its been given the name trench effect.
The trench effect doesnt tend to take hold until couples have been using their mattress for at least one year. When it occurs, it feels as if the middle of the mattress doesnt hold air as well as the outside of the mattress.
While we dont know for sure why this happens, customer reviews point to two likely culprits. One possible cause is couples sleeping at dramatically different firmness levels, say a 90 and a 20. This variation in firmness from one side to the other could cause the mattress to weaken in the middle over time. Next, the trench effect appears to happen more often with heavy sleepers than light sleepers. The dual-sided chambers may weaken faster with greater weight.
These reviews suggest that the Sleep Number bed is best for light to average weight people who have relatively similar mattress needs with their sleeping partner.
- Some couples, particularly heavy couples or those with different firmness needs, experience the trench effect. This is when the middle of the mattress sags, typically after a year or more of use.

Sleep Number 360 Ile Smart Bed Review
For months, my wife and I discussed our bed. It was aging out. We spent a third of our life in it, and I argued it was time for a new mattress. My wife also discovered she had some medical conditions that might benefit from a more adjustable bed. I was experiencing near chronic hip and shoulder pain nightly from my body hitting our old mattress in just the wrong places.
I spend time with the Sleep Number team every year I attend CES. In 2016 I covered them in The state of virtual reality in 2016: Whats working, whats not, and whats next, my CES VR reporting coverage for GeekWire when Sleep Number introduced a sleep deprivation VR experience.
Sleep Number always seemed like the best answer, as my wife and I always ended up in a Goldie Locks conversation about our bed being too soft or too hard. After hundreds of hotel nights, I traveled a lot pre-COVID and learned what I liked in a mattress. My preference gravitated toward a mattress that would hug and cuddle, with pressure points floating somewhere out-of-reach.
So, one day after a lunch out in Issaquah, Washington, my wife and I visited our local Sleep Number store.
Apologies ahead for oversharing.

You Might Not Want To Consider This Mattress If:
- Some nights you sleep alone and some nights you have a partner. Those who have a dual air chamber bed but spend many nights sleeping solo may find themselves stuck on one side of the bed. Laying in the middle of the bed essentially places you between two air chambers and may not give you the support you desire. This may be less noticeable on the firmer models. When you get to a P-6, you have a decent amount of cushion and probably sink further into the bed in between the dual air chambers.
- You are on a budget. The P-6 is sometimes placed on sale, but a Queen will run you over $2600.00 . That is the price for just the mattress the addition of an adjustable base which raises/lowers the head and foot of your bed plus other cool features is an added cost, as well as adding Sleep IQ Technology that at allows you to track your sleep.
