Downtown Furniture Business Under New Ownership
A longtime downtown Hutchinson furniture shop has changed hands, but the new owner is bringing a quarter century of similar retail experience to the Main Street store.
Brad Palmer, who opened Sleep Shoppe & Furniture Gallery at 11 N. Main in 1980, has sold the business to Kevin Rule, who has been a furniture retailer for most of his career in Wichita.
The two men knew each other from attending some of the same furniture markets around the country, Rule said.
I chose Hutchinson on purpose, due to the values Ive witnessed here, as well as the business structure of Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery, Rule said. It is apparent that this company is well respected by both furniture reps and consumers, so its a great fit for me.
Palmer grew the Hutchinson business over nearly 38 years to include furnishings for living rooms, casual dining, bedrooms, kids bedrooms, as well as a large mattress department. The store is in about a 14,000 square foot 2-story building thats graced downtown since 1956.
Palmer wasnt actively looking for a buyer when the two men started talking. Rule, however, was looking for a career change, he said.
Brad and I got together and talked about it a little bit and it seemed to be a great fit, he said. All the stars seemed to align. I had options where I could go, and I chose Hutch.
His goal, Rule said, is to help bring more people into downtown Hutchinson and to become more involved in community events and organizations.
