Assemble Sleep Number 360® Smart Mattress & FlexFit Adjustable Base

Applies To: Traditional FlexFit, FlexFit +, and FlexFit 1, 2, and 3 models. Excludes 360 Smart FlexFit Adjustable Bases.

Overview

Your base comes with removable legs. Heights vary based on what model you have and when you made your purchase. If you need to adjust the height of your bed, please contact customer service to order different height legs. See Furniture Fit Guide for full list of options.

Sizing And Weight Options

A heavier mattress will be more difficult to move, which is a factor for people who expect to relocate with any frequency. The height of a mattress can affect how well your sheets fit as well as how easily you can get in or out of bed, which is a primary concern for people with knee, hip, or back pain.

Choosing the right mattress size has a direct impact on your comfort in bed, the space in your bedroom, and the total price youll pay. Most mattresses are available in the six standard sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king but there are exceptions within the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number product lines. Some models are not offered in smaller sizes, and more specialized non-standard options are available for many mattresses.

Most Popular Sleep Number Beds

The most popular beds in the Sleep Number brand are the Classic 360® c2 and the Innovation 360® i8 Smart Bed. The first makes the list because it offers a lot of design for the price. The second does because it has every Sleep Number bell and whistle they offer.

Classic 360® c2

The Classic 360® c2 is the baseline model among all Sleep Number 360 beds. No fancy foam layers. No expensive base. Just 2 inches of fabric and foam on top of the eponymous, adjustable air chamber that basically makes a Sleep Number bed. Its affordable for a Sleep Number mattress and you can still adjust ho firm it feels. Its a budget option, but one with the most attractive mattress feature Sleep Number sells.

Innovation 360® Smart Bed i8

The Innovation 360® Smart Bed i8 is 12 inches thick with a soft and breathable fabric cover. The 6-inch comfort layer in the i8 uses two different types of foam for support and pressure relief. There is also a special material in the surface of the mattress that releases heat so the mattress keeps its cool. This bed has the dual air chambers that you can adjust to find the right firmness, SleepIQ® tracking, the temperature-balancing surface and the Responsive Air® feature that will add or release air as you shift at night to make the bed more comfortable.

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Classic Series

The under-$1,500 Classic Series is Sleep Numbers entry-level offering, and the mattresses in this line sure feel like it. The 8-inch c2 reminds me of a dormitory bednot surprising, since it contains only 2 inches of foam the rest of the mattress is made up of air encased in the bladder. The c4 has an inch more foam, for a total of 9 inches, and feels only slightly less institutional theres nothing cuddly about it. Unless youre used to sleeping on a mat or you plan on springing for a good mattress topper, we dont recommend this series.

In 2020, Sleep Number updated its 360 Smart Beds, adding temperature-balancing featuresincluding high air-flow fabrics and gel materialsmeant to make the mattresses feel cooler and more breathable.

Inside The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed

The best part about the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed is its customizability. That starts with the various configurations available for the bed itself. I tested the $3,800 king FlexTop P6 mattress, the $2,100 FlexFit 1 traditional base and two $850 DualTemp mattress pads. All together, that comes to $7,600.

Since were comparing the 360 bed to queen-size competitors from Beautyrest, Eight and Winkbed, I priced out the queen version of the bed I tested it comes to $5,500.

Whether its a king or a queen bed, the 360 Smart Bed by Sleep Number, with optional accessories like the FlexFit 1 base and the DualTemp pads, is expensive. See how it stacks up against other connected beds in the chart below.

Can I Use A Regular Mattress On An Adjustable Bed

Yes, you can use a standard mattress with an adjustable bed. The critical thing to keep in mind is that you need the right mattress. As we said previously, we dont recommend using an innerspring mattress or even a hybrid mattress because of the coils. These coils do not flex well and will cause an uncomfortable night of sleep, and theyll wear the mattress down.

If you choose to use a regular mattress that you purchase separately from the adjustable base, consult the manufacturer to make sure they think it will be compatible with the base. In some cases, you may even void the warranty by using the mattress on an adjustable base unless they state otherwise.

Sleep Number Series/model Breakdown

Sleep Number® FlexFit 2/3 vs Personal Comfort® Power-Flex 4 Adjustable Power Base

Sleep Number offers two types of beds:

  • 360® Smart Beds
  • Value Beds

The 360® Smart Beds are organized into three categories: Classic, Performance, and Innovation.

Each series essentially builds off the other. The Classic Series beds, the C2, and C4 offer the most standard options while the Innovation Series has the largest, thickest layers and most added features.

Classic Series:

The Classic series models are the most basic mattresses. They will have the firmest feel to them because there is the least amount of layers between the air chamber and the top of the mattress.

C-2
72 x 84 split only at the head of the bed

The Split and FlexTop mattresses are best paired with a FlexFit Adjustable Base. For example, with a Split King, the sleeper can raise/lower just the head and feet of his or her side of the bed. If the persons partner is snoring, he or she could raise the head of just their side with a FlexTop.

Modular & Adjustable Bases

Since Sleep Number is all about individualized comfort, it is not surprising that they also make different types of bases for the mattress.

Sleep Number makes one modular base and three different adjustable bases for their mattresses: FlexFit 1, FlexFit 2 and FlexFit 3.

Note: A Sleep Numbers modular or adjustable base is not the only base that works with a Sleep Number mattress. All one needs to have is a flat and sturdy surface for the mattress or the individual may potentially void his or her warranty.

How Sleep Number Mattresses Compare

The low end of each price range refers to the size noted in the chart. The high end refers to a split or flextop California king bed, unless noted. Split and flextop mattresses are the same pricea split mattress works for a base that adjusts only the upper body a flextop works for one that adjusts to both upper and lower bodyand theyre around $200 to $600 more expensive than a regular mattress of the same size.

Sleep Number Flexfit 2 Base Vs Leggett & Platt Prodigy 20

Many shoppers who start off on the search for an adjustable mattress dont realize that what they might actually prefer is an adjustable base, which allows you to elevate your head and feet and create endless positions that cater to in-bed activities, like reading and watching TV.

Adjustable bases may also improve sleep issues like snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep Number offers three adjustable bases that work with nearly any of its airbeds, and the FlexFit 2 is the middle-of-the-road price option. It comes in nine sizes, including split King, is backed by a 25-year warranty, and has under-bed lighting and other luxury features.

The Leggett & Platt Prodigy 2.0 is an alternative to the Sleep Number base, with a similar price point, great reviews on Amazon, three size options, including split King, and a 10-year warranty.

How To Choose The Right Model

Sleep Number

There are several resources and ways to decide which mattress is the best match.

Online:

Sleep Numbers website offers details, photos, FAQs, and images of each Sleep Number bed. They let potential customers compare models across series and have a Live Chat feature that should answer virtually any question. People can also get a quote or make a purchase online and through the Live Chat feature.

In-Store:

Sleep Number sells their beds in Sleep Number stores nationwide. Sleep Number Customer Service was unable to tell me exactly how many stores there are but estimated somewhere near 400.

Sleep Number stores can be found across the country, including Alaska and Hawaii. There are no international stores at the moment.

A sales representative at the store can help anyone who walks in find their Sleep Number and guide them towards the right model. They have a variety of beds out and available for testing if a person wants to feel one before he or she makes a purchase.

Beds come with a 30 or 100 night trial period plus a 25-year limited warranty.

Getting In Bed With The Competition

Here’s the thing, though. You can get a lot of the same sleep-tracking functionality from a much less expensive product. Eight sells mattresses, but its main smart device is its Sleep Tracker mattress pad.Ashlee Clark Thompson reviewed both the Eight Mars+ mattress and the Sleep Tracker mattress pad.

For just $419 in a king size and $399 in a queen size, the Eight Sleep Tracker retrofits to existing mattresses and tells you how you slept each night and even has an integrated heating element to keep you warm . The negative is that you’re missing all of that customization with the mattress firmness and the motorized base you get from Sleep Number, but you can use whatever frame and mattress you want with the Eight Sleep Tracker, so you still have tons of options. Eight’s Sleep Tracker also works with Alexa, IFTTT and Nest so you can connect your bed to more devices in your home.

The $199 Beautyrest Sleeptracker works similarly to Eight’s version, but it’s a device you put under your mattress, rather than a pad you fit over the entire mattress. You need one Beautyrest Sleeptracker per person, and you automatically get two with your $199 purchase . Beautyrest’s Sleeptracker only works with Alexa, though, and Molly Price said its tracking wasn’t as reliable as she expected during testing.

Unlike Sleep Number and Eight, you have to buy the Winkbed mattress to use the bed’s temperature control feature.

Who Might Not Want A Sleep Number

  • People who love memory foam Depending on what is available, there are one possibly two Sleep Number models that offer a comfort layer made with memory foam. Those who love the feel of classic memory foam will be limited on Sleep Number beds, which are at their core adjustable air beds.
  • Couples who like to sleep close together One of the biggest complaints from couples is that a sagging/division is created in between the dual air chambers on the bed. Couples who like to sleep close or cuddle in the center of the bed feel as those they are sinking into the middle of the bed.

Construction And Materials Comparison

The construction of a mattress is of central importance to its feel, performance, and durability. The construction includes both the design of its layers and the actual materials used in those layers.

In general, a mattress can be understood as having two main sections:

  • The comfort system is the top part and offers the most immediate effect on feel. It is normally made of polyfoam, memory foam, latex, wool, cotton, and/or polyester.
  • The support core is the bottom part of the mattress. It affects the mattress feel and the performance of the comfort system. The support core also helps prevent against excessive sagging in the mattress. It can be made with polyfoam, latex, innerspring coils, or air chambers.

Both the comfort system and support core can be made up of one or more layers that can be the same or different materials. Quality components in each and every layer will help protect against a weak link that drags down the overall mattress performance.

The following sections give an overview of the construction and materials in the Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number beds. While we know the basics about what goes into them, neither company discloses all the specifications of their mattresses, which can at times make it difficult to fully compare their models.

Sleep Number Mattresses: An Honest Assessment

  • Weve updated this guide with information on new temperature-balancing features in Sleep Numbers 360 Smart Bed line and the forthcoming Climate 360 Smart Bed.

Spending thousands of dollars on a mattress that, by volume, is mostly air may sound as ridiculous as paying inflated prices for bottled water. But with some marketing magic and a few enticing extras, real or imagined, anything can happen. Sleep Number, the most successful brand in the adjustable air-bed category, offers 11 models with varying levels of cushioning, all of which can be puffed up to your desired firmness level with just the touch of a button. If you sleep alone and have a consistent firmness preference, Sleep Number is an overpriced option. But for couples with vastly different tastes in mattress firmness, those adjustable, air-filled chambers could be worth it.
