Over the past few years, sleep number beds have revolutionized how people sleep at night by integrating some of the coolest smart technologies available. They have a lot of benefits to offer, from adjustable firmness to responsive air technology to sleep tracking . Before we get into the meat and bones of the Performance series mattresses, let us make sure that youre aware of the differences between the Performance Series and the other series of air mattresses.

The Firmness Of The Sleep Number C2 Mattress

As described above, the firmness of a Sleep Number bed is adjustable, though based on the model you start with, you can only change it so much. With the Sleep Number C2 mattress lacking the extra cushion, its a very firm feel to start with.

The dials on the mattress for the dual chambers of the two sides of a bed have simple arrows to show you up and down from 1 to 100 for firmness, with 1 being basically uninflated. Remember, the internal technology is based on air.

With the C2 mattress, the adjustment of the air, using the dials and internal pump that automatically locks in your sleep number, the firmness seems to be adjustable from about a 6.5 to an 8. This is a super firm bed, and since a mattress from this company has little response at all below around a 30, the only way to really adjust the softness would be to perhaps add a separate foam mattress pad layer on top of your mattress.

Patented Airflow Transfer System

If your body type generates extra heat or you just want to sleep cooler, all our memory foam beds come with the option of adding on our patented Airflow Transfer System, which allows cooler air to flow in two directions even when you sleep in the same position all night. Cooler air will enter through the many small holes that go down through the surface of the memory foam and out through the convoluted channels on the firmer base foam.

It also works in reverse, as air can enter through the sides and up through the surface holes. This unique system also allows a heat transfer as the warmer air radiates off the body and ventilates down through the holes and out the sides of the mattress. That is why we always use a breathable fabric where the channels exit on the sides of the mattress. In addition, a greater volume of airflow transfer will occur with even the slightest movements that occur throughout the sleeping process. While some mattress companies offer airflow through the middle layer of the mattress, they fall short of allowing the mattress user to receive any airflow benefit.

Sleep Number mattresses are typically purchased directly from Sleep Number, so thats where we found the majority of the online reviews. Out of the 34 good-quality negative user reviews we collected about the Classic Series , 10 contained complaints about issues related to a lack of cushioning. This included reviewers describing the mattress as too firm, too thin, bottoming out, or having poor pressure relief. Several reviewers pointed out that the c series is especially problematic for heavier-weight sleepers, and others noted the support felt better once they added a mattress topper.

For negative feedback on the Performance Series, we found far fewer complaints related specifically to the mattress thinness . But four out of 26 good-quality negative Innovation Series reviews noted that the mattresses were too firm or offered poor pressure relief. Perhaps this is to be expected, given that these users paid much more for their mattresses and therefore expected more. Three out of the six Cooling Memory Foam owners complained that their mattresses were either too thin, too firm, or lacked pressure relief.

Going with the C2 and adding my own bells and whistles

Very grateful for Candid Reviewer’s advice. We were interested in the C2 after seeing the excellent rating it received from Consumer Reports, with high marks for durability, side and back sleeping. We went to the sleep number store, stuck to our plan and avoided being up- sold, and bought both the recommended fiber topper and a gel topper to experiment with once the C2 arrives. We also are using our old metal frame with a queen-size bunkie board , for a nice savings compared to the $300 foundation from sleep number. More $ for new sheets and bedding!

Best bed I ever had. I’m a big person 300 Plus pounds…At year 10 the pump went out and I called…they still had my info and sold me a new pump at 1/2 price. It’s went through 2 moves and is still great! My husband is also big so it stands up to heavy folks. Folks on the phone were friendly and helpful. I’m looking now to buy my son one.

A Mattress For Every Type Of Sleeper

The 360 Smart Bed is available in a number of iterations and sizes. You can choose between full-split, top-split, and no-split mattresses, depending on whether you sleep alone or with a partner, in sizes ranging from twin to California king. Prices start at $1,399 and go as high as $5,699 for the mattress itself adding a base costs extra.

We tested a full-size, no-split p5 mattress with a FlexFit 1 base. With home installation and delivery included, it came to a total of $3,896.62. The p5 is a medium-support mattress with a four-inch comfort layer and a profile height of 10 inches. More premium models, like the i8 and i10, come with higher profiles and thicker comfort layers, and are made of cooling materials. You dont have to buy a base , but keep in mind that you cant use these mattresses with box springs.

Sleep Number is the top-selling brand of adjustable air beds. Started as Select Comfort by the founder of Comfortaire, Sleep Number/Select Comfort purchased the older company in 2013. In mid-2017, Select Comfort canceled all third-party marketing contracts for Comfortaire, and all operations except warranty service ceased by the end of the year. However, Sleep Number still uses the Comfortaire name for its RV airbeds, r3 and r5. These comply with Federal Motor Vehicle standards for safety. They also use the Comfortaire technology and foam configurations.

Mattress Firmness & Feel

It is difficult to determine an accurate mattress firmness since we are taking a look at both brands as a whole. However, Sleep Number offers a wider range of firmness options due to the customizable air chambers. When choosing between the different Sleep Number models, choose mattresses with thicker comfort layers for a plusher feel. Conversely, less foam in the top layers translates to an overall firmer surface feel.

That being said, Sleep Number uses a single air chamber on either side of the bed. When lying on the mattress the air is pushed towards the head and feet and can leave the midsection unsupported. Customer reviews show this is a common problem, leaving many frustrated with the lack of support. Some of the best adjustable air beds weve reviewed include multiple air chambers on either side of the bed for better spinal alignment.
