Spending thousands of dollars on a mattress that, by volume, is mostly air may sound as ridiculous as paying inflated prices for bottled water. But with some marketing magic and a few enticing extras, real or imagined, anything can happen. Sleep Number, the most successful brand in the adjustable air-bed category, offers 11 models with varying levels of cushioning, all of which can be puffed up to your desired firmness level with just the touch of a button. If you sleep alone and have a consistent firmness preference, Sleep Number is an overpriced option. But for couples with vastly different tastes in mattress firmness, those adjustable, air-filled chambers could be worth it.
The Sleep Number Value Beds
The Value Bed line is Sleep Numbers bed in a box option. The company is planning to discontinue it in the near future, but for now, given the current coronavirus crisis, it has gained in popularity because of its contact-free delivery. The Value lines s1 and the s3 mattresses cost about the same as the beds in the Classic line, but they have a quilted cushion layer . That quilted layer is zoned to cater to various pressure points there are five different cushioned areas in the s1 and seven in the s3. The company doesnt divulge details about its foam, so were not sure how the zones differ. But we do know that this comfort portion isnt thicker than the 2 inches we found wanting in the Classic lines entry-level c2, and the air pump sits on the floor, as opposed to being integrated into the mattress itself, like with the other lines. And although the Value line comes with SleepIQ technology, the Value Beds dont have the smart feature that allows them to conform to your body as you shift positions. We havent tried this line, but given how spartan the c line felt, we cant imagine that any amount of quilting or zoning would compensate for the thin comfort layer.

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ Consumer air bed company Personal Comfort® now has defeated Sleep Number® in two unwarranted lawsuits, including a 12-member federal jury trial on trademark infringement/dilution, unfair competition, and false advertising that concluded last month.
Todays announcement marks back-to-back wins for the company and makes an even larger statement about making quality product in the number bed mattress market. Personal Comfort and its supplier American National defended itself against two lawsuits over three different patents, and won against Sleep Number in the U.S. International Trade Commission ruling on patent infringement at the end of 2016, and this Octobers federal jury-trial verdict is yet another big win.
At trial, Sleep Number claimed it was false advertising for Personal Comfort to say their beds were preferred over Sleep Number and were upgraded versions of Sleep Number. During trial, President of American National Manufacturing Craig Miller built both beds, side-by-sidea Personal Comfort A8 and a Sleep Number i8. After Millers testimony, the jury rejected Sleep Numbers false-advertising claims.

Before we jump into recommendations, its important to note that the experience of sleeping on an airbed can feel quite different from that of more traditional mattress styles, like all-foam or hybrid beds. If you love memory foam, for example, an airbed wont provide the same enveloping feeling you enjoy, regardless of how thick the comfort layers are.
Secondly, if you enjoy cuddling with your partner while you sleep, the dual air chambers may impede that and can feel uncomfortable. Lastly, these airbeds arent for people with a limited budget, considering the most affordable Smart Bed option starts at $999.

Delivery Warranty And Returns
The Value Bed line ships free via UPS. Other lines can be delivered in-person for $200. You can pick a day and time window based on availability, and, if all works well, Sleep Numbers Comfort Service Home Delivery service team stops by with your mattress, configures the air pumps and app, and shows you how everything works. However, the delivery team missed my window twice because of New York City traffic . I received my bed on the third try, only to find out that I had been given a one-chamber instead of a two-chamber mattress, as requested. For my re-order, with the help of the Sleep Number public relations team, I was able to confirm a morning delivery and received the correct mattress without a hitch. To be fair, despite my experience, customer service wasnt a big pain point among the user reviews we analyzed.
Theres a 100-night free trial for all new Sleep Number mattresses, but you need to sleep on one for 30 nights before filing for a return. Plus, if you decide to return the mattress, theres at least a $200 fee to cover transportation costs. If you ordered an adjustable base with your mattress, that base cannot be returned.
The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Classic Series
The under-$1,500 Classic Series is Sleep Numbers entry-level offering, and the mattresses in this line sure feel like it. The 8-inch c2 reminds me of a dormitory bednot surprising, since it contains only 2 inches of foam the rest of the mattress is made up of air encased in the bladder. The c4 has an inch more foam, for a total of 9 inches, and feels only slightly less institutional theres nothing cuddly about it. Unless youre used to sleeping on a mat or you plan on springing for a good mattress topper, we dont recommend this series.

Going with the C2 and adding my own bells and whistles
Very grateful for Candid Reviewer’s advice. We were interested in the C2 after seeing the excellent rating it received from Consumer Reports, with high marks for durability, side and back sleeping. We went to the sleep number store, stuck to our plan and avoided being up- sold, and bought both the recommended fiber topper and a gel topper to experiment with once the C2 arrives. We also are using our old metal frame with a queen-size bunkie board , for a nice savings compared to the $300 foundation from sleep number. More $ for new sheets and bedding!

Best bed I ever had. I’m a big person 300 Plus pounds…At year 10 the pump went out and I called…they still had my info and sold me a new pump at 1/2 price. It’s went through 2 moves and is still great! My husband is also big so it stands up to heavy folks. Folks on the phone were friendly and helpful. I’m looking now to buy my son one.
