Sleep Number Bed Weight Limit For Heavy People

To optimize sleep, knowing the weight limit is important. A bed should support the weight of a user to prevent squeaking and other issues at night.

Based on the size, Sleep Number beds have one or two adjustable air chambers modifiable to the desired level of firmness and comfort. Each of the two chambers has a 400-pound weight limit.

Full, Twin XL and Twin Sleep Number beds have a 400-pound limit as they have one air chamber while California King, King and Queen Sleep Number beds boast an 800-pound weight limit as they have 2 air chambers.

While the Sleep Number weight limit is impressive, it is lighter compared to others. With a 400-pound limit, the Sleep Number bed can handle sleepers weighing 230 pounds and above.

Ghost SmartBed, on the other hand, has five zones compared to Sleep Number’s one zone making it ideal for a heavyset body.

Mattresses in the Classic Series are billed as the comfortable, adjustable, affordable Sleep Number option.

The c2 Smart Bed has a 2-inch gel-infused comfort layer, which might feel thin if youre used to a more generous pillow top. Like all Sleep Number mattresses, this one responds to your movements and automatically adjusts firmness.

Despite the slim comfort layer, over 11,000 reviews rank the c2 Smart Bed 4.6 out of 5 stars. More than 9,000 of these reviews are 5 stars, with customers calling it a great investment. Other reviewers love having the freedom to adjust their settings for specific comfort.

Inside The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed

The best part about the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed is its customizability. That starts with the various configurations available for the bed itself. I tested the $3,800 king FlexTop P6 mattress, the $2,100 FlexFit 1 traditional base and two $850 DualTemp mattress pads. All together, that comes to $7,600.

Since we’re comparing the 360 bed to queen-size competitors from Beautyrest, Eight and Winkbed, I priced out the queen version of the bed I tested — it comes to $5,500.

Whether it’s a king or a queen bed, the 360 Smart Bed by Sleep Number, with optional accessories like the FlexFit 1 base and the DualTemp pads, is expensive. See how it stacks up against other connected beds in the chart below.

The company says the bed will have sensors to measure sleep-tracking data like your heart, heart-rate variability, and breathing rate. Among other features, the mattress will automatically adjust firmness in response to your movements, and warm or cool the bed based on your body temperature. Sleep Number also now offers a kids bed.

The Sleep Number 360⢠Smart Bed

With the inclusion of Sleep IQ technology, we were also curious whether Sleep Number had any plans on using any of the bed data for clinical purposes. Sleep Number does provide users the option of contributing their sleep data for research purposes and we learned that earlier this year, scientists presented a couple of research posters using data from Sleep Number beds at the SLEEP 2021 Annual Meeting.

We spoke with Rajasi Mills, VP of Sleep IQ Health to learn more about the findings. The first study she shared was about heart rate variability data collected from the beds. HRV is a biomarker found in many gadgets weve covered on Medgadget and is an indicator for various physical and mental health conditions, as those with a high HRV may exhibit better cardiovascular fitness and be more adaptable to stress. The researchers analyzed data from 18.2 million sleep sessions from 379,225 Sleep Number beds and found significant associations between HRV and age, gender, and even day of the week. For example, they found that HRV declined at a rate of about 2.1 milliseconds per year, until age 50, leveled off until around age 65, and then increased slightly thereafter, perhaps giving this editor clinically-validated rationale for an early retirement. The data also suggested that HRV was generally highest over the weekend and lowest at mid-week, giving this editor more reason for more extended weekends.

I8 Smart Bed Mattress Feel

As for the mattress itself the 360® I8 mattress is softer than many Sleep Number beds. This is because of one main factor: the comfort layer. The Comfort layer is 6 of comfort foam, which is right above the air chamber, giving you six extra inches of plush support, making the bed feel pretty soft.

Another way to indicate soft or firmness is to decode Sleep Numbers model names. The higher the number in the series, the more cushion provided. So, the I8 will be softer than the c2, but just a touch more firm than the I10.

Of course, you can always adjust your Sleep Number to make the bed more firm or soft, depending on your preference.

Many reviewers and testers rated the 360® I8 higher than other Sleep Numbers, especially citing the lack of motion transfer, which is when you can feel someone else rolling around on their side of the bed. A lot of couples talked about the fact they had a very different Sleep Number from their partner, and happily and peacefully slept on their side without any disruption in the night. Do be warned though, many other reviews for various Sleep Number beds talked about the trench effect, which is when the middle of the bed sags from both sides having very different sleep numbers.

If you sleep on memory foam mattresses, these also are known for transferring little motion, so your experience of this would be pretty similar.

Should You Choose Firm Or Soft

This is much like when we speak on comfort and support.

A new mattress should never be too firm, nor should it ever be too soft.

A mattress should be as neutral as it can be, to ensure both your body and spine stay in a neutral position.

Too much rigidity in a mattress will irritate the stress variables, making pinched nerves, in addition to the blood to stop flowing.

If you wake up with a sensation of pins and needles in your body, theres a good chance your mattress is too firm.

And if your mattress is too soft, this can create a sagging effect, similar to a hammock.

This can trigger back pain, caused by uneven spinal alignment.

This is why we say you want a mattress that is neutral.

You need your mattress soft in the right places, without being too soft.

You likewise want a mattress that has some firmness to it just not too rigid. Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed

The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed Performance Series

The Performance Series is slightly plusher than the Classic Series. The p5 and cooling pSE each have 4 inches of cushioning, for a total height of 10 inches. The p6, the companys most popular mattress, has an additional inch of cushioning, for an overall thickness of 11 inches.

Compared with the beds in the Classic line and the Performance lines p5, the p6 felt like a real mattress, the kind with a surface thats adequately cushioned for people who are not particularly high-maintenance. But when I tried the p6 at home, I couldnt shake the feeling that I was sleeping on a rubber raft. The 5 inches of foam wasnt enough for me to nestle into, even with a softer air-bladder setting. Letting out air offered more give, but then the bed didnt feel as supportive, and it still didnt feel fluffy, per se.

I was left feeling adrift, but my husband, by contrast, loved sleeping on the p6. For once, instead of compromising on my medium-soft-mattress preferences, he could sleep on a firm mattress next to me. It was a sad day for him when we returned this mattress.

The pSE wasnt available to try at the store when I visited, but Sleep Numbers publicist said it has proprietary ClimaTemp foam that is softer and more plush than whats typically used on the p series. Unfortunately, were not sure exactly how this technology works because Sleep Number doesnt share details about its foam.
